Daily World section will honor Class of 2020

The novel coronavirus pandemic has made this school year far from normal.

This spring, teachers, counselors and administrators in districts all around the Twin Harbors had to adapt their school curriculums on short notice — and ensure their seniors could still graduate under the new distance-learning format. They did a commendable job of it.

Because of physical distancing restrictions, however, sports, club activities, proms and even day-to-day socializing were wiped out. As a result, although they are getting their diplomas, this year’s graduating class has missed out on numerous traditions and experiences normally enjoyed by high school seniors.

“We wanted to create something meaningful for these students,” said Daily World Publisher Mike Hrycko. “This has been a difficult and, in many ways, disappointing year for them; but in spite of it all, they have completed their journey. We feel that calls for some special recognition.”

And so The Daily World plans to publish a special supplement next month to honor the Twin Harbors Class of 2020.

Nearly 800 seniors are graduating this month from 16 high schools in Grays Harbor and northern Pacific counties. The publication will picture every one of them and include information about each school’s valedictorians and salutatorians, as well as a statement from the principal, dean or superintendent.

The special publication will be available in print and online July 25. Extra copies will be available to the seniors’ immediate family at our office at no charge while supplies last.
