Charles Gary Logan, 83, of Carlton, Washington, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019. Gary was born in Tacoma, Washington, on Oct. 9, 1935, to Charles “Swede” and Carmen (Marble) Logan.
He is survived by his wife Diana, his sons Gordon and David (Lory), daughter Lisa (Brian), his grandson Dustin, and granddaughters Leilani and Emily.
Gary grew up in the Methow where he attended Twisp schools. He graduated from Twisp High School in 1954. Gary then went on to study education and horticulture at WSU and Eastern Washington University. He worked as a fire lookout at Leecher Mt. during the college summer breaks. Gary married LeAnn Serrurier in 1956 in Winthrop, Washington. They had three children; Gordon, David and Lisa while both of them finished up their degrees. After he taught briefly at Cowiche and Twisp schools, Gary and his family moved to Elma, Washington, to start his career as a principal. He later became the Superintendent at Elma School District. He retired from ESD after 40 years of service. He loved his community and gave back by serving on the Elma City Council and the Lions Club.
He spent his summers taking his family on epic trips horse packing in the North Cascades, hiking to high mountain lakes to fish, driving around the West taking in National Parks, and traveling the region racing horses as a hobby as well as being a member of the Sheriff’s Posse. One of the horses that he purchased was a retired thoroughbred, and that was the start of horse racing along with his longtime friends Lester Darren and Bill Martin, He was instrumental in bringing horse racing back to Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds. In the fall it was all about football, WSU Cougar football. Go Cougs!
After retirement, Gary moved back to his beloved homeland in the Methow Valley. He met and married Diana Flood. They spent their time traveling extensively. He was involved in the community and served on the irrigation board. Gary and Diana bought and ran a restaurant in Twisp. He felt a need in the Twisp community for affordable housing so he bought a lot in Twisp and built a modest house to sell. Gary loved having friends and family over to spend time hunting, fishing, mushrooming, or just hanging out and telling stories.
Gary touched many lives throughout his 83 years and will be missed by many. A memorial potluck will be held at the Twisp Grange hall on Saturday, April 13, 2019, at 2 p.m.
