Aberdeen 2, Hoquiam 1

Aberdeen’s Emma Green sat out most of the first half but ended up scoring the game-winning goal with a penalty kick in the 77th minute to give Aberdeen the 2-1 victory over Hoquiam Tuesday night at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.

The rivalry game appeared to be headed for a tie with the score at 1-1 in the final minutes of second half.

Aberdeen had controlled the pace of play for much of the second half, putting seven shots on goal, but hadn’t been able to find the back of the net.

The Bobcat’s aggressive play paid dividends when forward Emmy Walsh was taken down in the box to draw a penalty.

Green, with her injured thigh still wrapped, placed the penalty kick to her go-to spot, low and to the right side of the goal, to put Aberdeen up 2-1.

Hoquiam keeper Katie Burnett had made six saves in the second half but couldn’t get enough of the game-winning penalty shot to keep it out of the net as the ball glanced off her elbow when she dived to her right.

Green said getting selected to take the penalty was nerve-racking but she felt relieved once she saw the ball get past the keeper.

“I was really nervous and I was just like ‘find your spot,”’ she said. “I placed it where I wanted it, so I was happy with how it turned out.”

Aberdeen got off to a fast start in the first half with a goal in the third minute.

Bobcats midfielder Abbie Bradt played a through ball that Walsh ran onto and beat Burnett 1-on-1 with a shot from deep in the box to give Aberdeen a 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats offense hit a lull after firing the opening salvo, leaving Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming disappointed with his team’s goal total.

“I’m frustrated because we had a lot of time in front of their goal with not a lot of goals,” he said. “Yes, the field is narrow. Yes, it’s a little mushy (at midfield), but we just made some bad touches and bad choices.”

The Grizzlies took advantage of a mistake at the back to tie the game in the 34th minute. Emily McFadden scored when the Bobcats failed to clear the ball out of the box, leaving McFadden with a point-blank opportunity that she buried to bring her team level.

Hoquiam’s second-half struggles were a disappointment to head coach Drew Grannemann, who thought his team didn’t display the vigor necessary for a rivalry game.

“It doesn’t matter how good one team is compared to the other in these rivalry matchups, anything can happen,” he said. “This is when the mental aspect of the game is so important because physical ability and soccer IQ go out the window in the heat of the moment. If you just have that innate fire like Aberdeen had tonight, it’s easy to walk away victorious.”

Green will still be nursing her injury when the team heads to Tenino, but had no regrets about fighting through the pain to help her team secure the victory.

“My thigh is really hurting right now, but you have to stick it out for the rivalry game,” she said.
