Prep Roundup: Hollingsworth tosses one-hitter to lead Aberdeen over Rochester

Also: Hoquiam wins for fourth time in past five games; Pe Ell-Willapa Valley beats Ilwaco

Aberdeen pitcher Annika Hollingsworth dazzled while the Hoquiam Grizzlies won for the fourth time in five games as we review Wednesday’s Twin Harbors prep games.

PREP SOFTBALL

Aberdeen 5, Rochester 0

Aberdeen put a little breathing room between itself and Rochester with a 5-0 victory on Wednesday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (11-3 overall, 6-2 2A Evergreen) got a huge performance from standout Annika Hollingsworth.

The senior pitcher held a no-hitter through 5 2-3 innings and sparkled in the complete-game one-hitter, walking two while striking out 15 Warriors.

The right-hander got plenty of support from her teammates as the the Bobcats scored a run in the bottom of the second when Britten Neal drove in Scotlyn Lecomte with a double.

After a Laynie Yakovich RBI single made it 2-0 in the third, Hollingsworth helped herself by belting Layna Demers’ 1-0 pitch over the center-field fence for a two-run home run.

Abby Mainio doubled home Neal in the fourth for a 5-0 lead that Hollingsworth made stick, retiring seven of the final nine batters she faced to secure the win.

With the victory, Aberdeen sits in third place in the 2A EvCo, 2.5 games up on Rochester and one game behind W.F. West and Tumwater for the top spot in the league.

The Cats have a golden opportunity on Friday when they host Tumwater at 4:30 p.m. at the Bishop Athletic Complex in Aberdeen.

Hoquiam 11, Tenino 4

One game after hitting the most home runs by any Grizzlies team over the past 20 years, Hoquiam’s offense hammered Tenino for 17 hits en route to an 11-4 victory on Wednesday in Hoquiam.

The Grizzlies (6-10, 4-1 1A Evergreen) – which had six home runs on Monday – won for the fourth time in their past five games on the back of an offense that had two players – left fielder Mya Standstipher and first baseman Avery Howard – got a perfect 4-f0r-4 in the game.

Hoquiam took a 7-0 lead after three innings, thanks in large part to a four-run second inning highlighted by a Standstipher RBI triple.

Up 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Grizzlies put up another four spot, scoring all four runs with two outs capped by an Avery Templer run-scoring single.

Hoquiam catcher Faith Prosch, who hit the most home runs in a game by any Grizzly over the past two decades with three on Monday, went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Kayte Sauer allowed four runs – one earned – on 10 hits and a walk with a strikeouts in five innings pitched to earn the win for Hoquiam.

With its recent success under interim head coach Matti Ekerson, the Grizzlies now sit in third place in the 1A Evergreen League.

Hoquiam had a big test when it faces Montesano at 4 p.m. on Monday in Montesano.

Ocosta 19, Taholah 1

Ocosta defeated Taholah 19-1 in three innings on Wednesday in Westport.

Ocosta (11-2) led 9-1 before scoring 10 runs in the third inning, highlighted by a Noel Cuzdey triple the turned into a “Little League” grand-slam home run after a Taholah error on the play.

The Chitwhins (0-3) scored a run in the top of the first when Keeliana McCrory led off with a single and came in to score on a two-out single off the bat of Luvaila Smith.

Joanah Rosander earned the win, allowing a run on two hits with seven strikeouts in three innings pitched.

Jessie Gilbert led Ocosta at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and three RBI.

Of Ocosta’s seven hits in the game, five went for extra bases and the Wildcats drew 11 walks as a team.

Ocosta hosts Forks in a double header at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 6, Ilwaco 0

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley picked up a clutch league victory with a 6-0 shutout over Ilwaco in the first game of a double header on Wednesday in Ilwaco.

The Titans (14-4, 5-1 2B Pacific) got a standout pitching performance from league MVP candidate Connor “Cheese” Keeton, who allowed three hits while striking out six in tossing a complete-game shutout.

Keeton needed just 80 pitches to dispatch of the Fishermen (12-3, 4-1), throwing 56 strikes (70%), and retired eight straight batters in the fifth through seventh innings.

PWV took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a Max Jarvis fielder’s choice ground out.

The Titans added a run in the third on a Liam Smaciarz RBI ground out.

PWV gave Keeton plenty of cushion with four runs in the sixth, one on a Brayden Ruddell fielder’s choice ground out and three on a home run to center field off the bat of Lucas Lusk.

The win puts PWV in position to earn the league’s No. 2 district-playoff spot with an Ilwaco loss to unbeaten league No. 1 Forks on Monday.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley was one-hit in the nightcap, falling 2-0 to Ilwaco in a non-league contest.

Ilwaco starting pitcher Cannon Johnson held PWV to just one base hit – a Max Jarvis double with one out in the fifth inning – and benefited from his defense turning two double plays to shutout the Titans.

Liam Smaciarz was took the loss for PWV, allowing two earned runs on a Boston Caron home run in the bottom of the first inning, which turned out to be the only runs of the contest.

PWV hosts Onalaska in a non-league game set for 3 p.m. on Monday.
