Tumwater 2, Aberdeen 1

(Tumwater wins 9-8 on penalty kicks)

Aberdeen missed a chance to gain some ground in the 2A Evergreen Conference with a 2-1 loss (9-8 on penalty kicks) to Tumwater on Tuesday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (6-4 overall, 5-5 2A Evergreen) trailed by a goal after a questionable penalty on what appeared to be a dive led to a Tumwater penalty-kick goal by junior forward Dylan Stevens in the 7th minute of the game.

Aberdeen responded when senior midfielder Freddy Hernandez played a ball forward to senior Elmer Torres, who beat two T-Birds defenders and held possession near the Tumwater end line. Torres then dropped a pass back to junior forward Evan Cone, who blasted a one-timer past the Tumwater keeper and tie the game at 1-1 in the 22nd minute.

The Bobcats continued to pound the Tumwater net with shots in the second half, including a headed ball by senior midfielder Ruben Oropeza that rang off the far post and a shot by Torres in a 1-on-1 that went wide.

Aberdeen nearly scored the go-ahead goal when senior midfielder Juan Serrano ripped a 30-yard shot that required a finger-tip save by the Tumwater keeper to keep from going into the lower-right corner of the net.

The game remained 1-1 through two overtime periods and would require an extended penalty-kick shootout to decide the outcome.

In the shootout, Aberdeen made eight shots as Cone, Torres, Edgar Ceja, Oropeza, Jeremy Morales, Marc Avila, Trino Villar and Angel Espinosa each converted their chances.

But Tumwater made nine shots to secure the win, handing Aberdeen its third PK-shootout loss this season.

“It seems like we’ve had those kind of breaks all season,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “We defended and passed well and it’s too bad we lost our third shootout. We could easily be 8-2 instead of 5-5.”

With the loss, Aberdeen missed a chance to move to within a half-game of Tumwater for second place in the 2A EvCo.

The Bobcats take on Shelton at 7 p.m. Thursday in Shelton.

Aberdeen’s JV team won 2-0 on Tuesday, with Oscar Leiva and Trino Villar scoring for the Bobcats.
