Montesano 4, King’s Way Christian 1

Montesano made up for a lack of scoring in the first half with four goals in the final 40 minutes to stroll past King’s Way Christian for a 4-1 win and advance to the semifinal round of districts.

The Bulldogs are now in the double-elimination portion of the 1A District IV Tournament and will face La Center at Tenino High School at 5 p.m. tonight.

Monte (13-4 overall) controlled most of possession in the first half, but it didn’t translate into any scoring. The Bulldogs nearly got on the board in the final minutes of the half when Brooke Streeter’s breakaway shot attempt was parried away by Knights keeper Sara Thudium.

Montesano head coach Fidel Sanchez said he had mixed feelings when he saw that his team was locked in a scoreless tie at halftime.

“When you have all that possession and you don’t get quality chances and a goal in the first half, you’re like, ‘What’s going on?’” he said. “You’re pleased with your team, but not overly pleased because we know we’re missing something.”

Montesano’s Jaiden Morrison provided the missing scoring in the 45th minute. Anna Ayres played the ball to Morrison near the top of the box, where Morrison ripped a shot from 5-yards out to the far post, putting the Bulldogs up 1-0.

Ayres scored a goal of her own in the 58th minute when she crashed the net and put away a rebound after Streeter’s original shot had been saved.

Sanchez said he was impressed with how quickly his team flipped the switch in the second half.

“In the second half, everything just clicked. They were finding space, they were finding through runs and we finally started shooting really good, high-percentage shots,” he said. “That’s what we talked about at halftime. We had to start hitting better shots.”

Ayres came through with a second goal less than two minutes after her first goal, scoring from deep in the box after receiving a through ball from Streeter to put Monte up 3-0.

Streeter rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs with a shot from five yards outside the box that she labeled for the top right corner to give Monte a commanding 4-0 lead.

With some of the starters pulled from the game in the final 10 minutes, the Knights scored their only goal on a close-range shot from Annabelle Atwood in the 73rd minute.

The win gives Montesano a measure of revenge on the team that eliminated them from districts a year ago, but Sanchez is focused on continuing a high level of play against Trico League champion La Center tonight.

“La Center is going to be a high-line team, so hopefully we can get some quality passes going forward,” he said. “But any time you win league, you’re a tough team, so we’ll see how it goes.”

Castle Rock 1, Hoquiam 0

Castle Rock defeated Hoquiam 1-0 in a 1A Evergreen League District IV Tournament game on Tuesday at Castle Rock High School.

Castle Rock (13-4) scored in the 50th minute to break the scoreless tie.

Hoquiam (7-9-1) had opportunities to tie the game in the second half, but shots by Sadie Carlyle and Taylor Strom failed to find the back of the net as the Grizzlies’ season ended with the 1-0 loss.

“I thought it was a well-fought match, the type of match that could’ve gone either way,” Hoquiam head coach Drew Grannemann said. “I’m proud of how we performed tonight, proud of how we performed throughout the season. Athletics should be exciting and this was an exciting one.”

Aberdeen survives Kansas tiebreaker to advance

Dylan Richie’s 3-yard plunge into the endzone eliminated the Black Hills Wolves and sent the Aberdeen Bobcats to the crossover round as Aberdeen advanced during a Kansas tie-breaker on Tuesday in Centralia.

In the three-way tiebreaker, Centralia opened up with a victory over Black Hills, meaning all the Bobcats had to do to advance was to defeat the Wolves in the subsequent matchup, which pits teams against each other in a format identical to an overtime situation.

The Wolves’ offense drive stalled out at the 12-yard line, and a field-goal attempt was no good, meaning all the Bobcats had to do was score to advance.

Aberdeen running back Ethan Morrill carried the ball for runs of 10 and six yards before Richie got across the goal line for the touchdown, elminating Black Hills and sending Aberdeen and Centralia to the playoffs.

The Bobcats will get the 2A Evergreen League’s No. 3 seed due to their victory over Centralia earlier in the season. Aberdeen will face Ridgefield at 6 p.m. on Saturday in a 2A State crossover game at Ridgefield High School.
