Bulldogs girls advance to Yakima; Monte boys can’t recover from fourth-quarter run

GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

No. 11 Montesano 41, No. 14 Cascade Christian 25

Montesano’s defense held Cascasde Christian to less than 20 points until early in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs earned a trip to Yakima with a 41-25 win in a 1A State Tournament first-round game on Saturday at Tumwater High School.

The Bulldogs were led by sophomore forward Jillie Dalan (11 points, 14 rebounds) and forced 25 Cougars’ turnovers.

Monte will face No. 6 Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) in a Round of 12 elimination game at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday at the Yakima SunDome.

No. 11 Lummi Nation 53, No. 14 Taholah 42

Taholah’s season came to an end with a 53-42 loss to Lummi Nation in a 1B State Tournament first-round game on Saturday at Mount Vernon High School.

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL

No. 13 Sultan 69, No. 12 Montesano 54

Montesano’s run into the state tournament ended in prematurely with a 69-54 1A State first-round loss to the Sultan Turks on Saturday at Tumwater High School.

The Bulldogs rallied from down nine at the half to take a 39-34 lead in the third quarter.

Tied at 47-all entering the final period, the Turks opened the fourth quarter with a 11-0 run.

Monte would never get closer than seven points the rest of the way in suffering the season-ending loss.
