Raymond-South Bend 3, Hoquiam 2

Raymond-South Bend moved into sole possession of first place in the 1A Evergreen League with a 3-2 win over Hoquiam on Wednesday in Hoquiam.

The Ravens (12-2 overall, 12-2 1A Evergreen) needed a win to claim no worse than a share of the league title, and Hoquiam (6-11, 6-8) had plans on spoiling RSB’s party.

The Grizzlies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the game as freshman forward JB Fabian scored two breakaway goals in the 16th and 19th minutes.

Facing a legitimate threat of seeing a potential league title slip away, the Ravens rallied to tie the game before halftime.

RSB junior midfielder Edgar Ramirez scored a goal in the 33rd minute followed by a penalty-kick conversion five minutes later as the game went into the break tied at 2-2.

“We were not at our best for that half,” Ravens head coach Joe Keegan said. “Fair to say it was not one of our better performances, but we were dogged.”

Ravens freshman forward Adam Mora scored a goal in the 58th minute to put RSB up for good.

With the win, RSB completed its league schedule and sits a half-game in front of Montesano in first place. The Bulldogs have one league game left on their schedule.

If Monte loses its final league game against last-place Ilwaco on Monday, RSB would be the outright 1A Evergreen League champion and lock-up the No. 1 district-playoff seed.

A Monte win means a share of the league title and Montesano would be the No. 1 seed with the Ravens the No. 2 seed due to a goal-differential tie-breaker.

RSB will host Centralia in a non-league match at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

The loss ends Hoquiam’s season in fifth place, one spot away from qualifying for the district playoffs.

“To feed off of our last game, we kept the momentum going. We dominated the field, just couldn’t get a shot in the net,” Hoquiam head coach Corri Schmid said. “I’m so proud of the team for ending the season on a high note. I can’t wait to see what we bring to the field next year.”

Elma 4, Eatonville 0

The Elma Eagles secured the third-playoff seed in the 1A Evergreen League with a 4-0 Senior Night win over Eatonville on Wednesday in Elma.

The Eagles (11-6, 10-4) got balanced scoring with three different players collecting at least a goal and an assist in the game.

Senior midfielder Jose Perez started things off with a goal in the sixth minute off a pass from senior forward Cason Seaberg.

The two connected 13 minutes later, with Seaberg feeding Perez for his second goal of the game and a 2-0 lead.

Just before halftime, Perez passed to freshman Luis Torres, who saw the Eatonville keeper off his line. The midfielder/forward hit a 45-yard, high-arcing shot over the keeper and into the net for a 3-0 lead.

The Eagles added an insurance goal in the 66th minute when Torres passed to Seaberg for a goal, the 99th of the former 1A Evergreen League MVP’s stellar prep career.

Senior goal keeper Tanner Thompson earned the clean sheet, recording the first full-game shutout of his varsity career.

“We just didn’t quite finish there in Montesano. … It felt like tonight, we were able to do that,” Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said, referencing a loss earlier in the week to Montesano. “I think you saw a lot of the exact same movement. We did a nice job not allowing any goals. It’s always nice to get a shutout.”

Despite finishing with identical 10-4 league records and splitting two head-to-head games this season, Elma ends up as the No. 3 seed with a plus-three goal differential, which is the league tiebreaker.

The Eagles will play at the Trico League No. 2 seed (to be determined) on Saturday, May 4.
