West Market property that housed crime, drug activity, had neighbors in fear, is demolished

DAN HAMMOCK | THE DAILY WORLD The burned-out remains of the structures that stood at the corner of West Market and South Michigan streets are gone. The City of Aberdeen purchased the property at 518, 5181/2 and 522 West Market in the spring for the assessed value of $74,750 from the owner’s estate; almost $62,000 went into escrow to be used by the estate to demolish the structures. According to the proposal from the city in March of 2016, the price of the property was less than the estimated cost of demolition. Not only were the burned-out buildings an eyesore, they attracted vagrants and drug and criminal activity that left neighbors in fear and Aberdeen Police busy for months. Workers were leveling the property Thursday afternoon; it will eventually be a gravel lot.
