BOYS BASKETBALL

Vikings 57, Mules 55 (OT)

CATHLAMET — Surviving a late Wahkiakum charge in regulation, Willapa Valley outlasted the Mules in overtime in a season-opening non-leaguer Monday at Cathlamet.

The Vikings led by 12 with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Mules caught fire with their 3-point shooting to forge a 52-all standoff at the end of regulation. But Willapa Valley reversed the momentum and overcame foul trouble and a vocal Wahkiakum crowd to lead all the way in OT.

“To withstand all that and find a way to win, those are things you can’t teach,” Viking coach Jay Pearson said. “When things didn’t go well, they didn’t get rattled. They just kept playing.”

The Vikings (1-0) received a major boost from freshman Logan Walker, who scored 21 points. Peter Hamilton added 16 points and 14 rebounds and Matt Pearson dished out seven assists for Willapa Valley.

The Vikings travel to North Beach on Thursday.

VANCOUVER — Forcing Elma into 15 first-half turnovers, Seton Catholic cruised past the Eagles in a non-league game Monday in Vancouver.

The Cougars capitalized on the turnovers to lead 47-11 at the half. Elma (0-2) committed only two turnovers in the second half in playing Seton Catholic to a standoff in the final two quarters.

“Rebounding was a bright spot,” Elma coach Jeff Niemi said. “We outrebounded them 40-32 and they were great athletes. We need to avoid those slow starts and we’ll be OK. I’m very proud of the team for continuing to play hard, no matter what.”

Cody Vollan and Carter Jacobson scored eight points apiece for Elma.

TAHOLAH — Chief Leschi stormed from behind in the second half to turn back Taholah’s upset bid in a non-league game Monday at Taholah.

Regarded as one of the favorites in the 2B Pacific League, the Warriors trailed by as many as 12 points before outscoring the Chitwhins (1-1) 30-15 in the fourth quarter. Taholah made only one field goal in that period.

“We just missed some layins that were real heartbreakers,” Taholah coach Mike Rose said. “I was really pleased with our effort, especially since Chief Leschi is a really good team.”

Taholah’s Zach Cain scored 30 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and blocked four shots. Jesse Purdy added 17 points and eight rebounds. Jim Billie came off the bench to grab six rebounds for the Chitwhins (1-1)

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Eagles 57, Gulls 16

RAYMOND — Molly Johnston scored 16 points as Elma trounced Raymond in a non-league game Monday at Raymond.

Hampered by foul trouble at the outset, the Eagles (3-0) limited the Gulls to four field goals and had a hand in 32 Raymond turnovers.

“It was a slow-starting game for us, with early foul trouble for four starters. We turned it up the second half,” Elma coach Lisa Johnson said.

Johnston was also cited for shot-blocking. Kassedy Olson converted four steals into baskets and Kayli Johnson contributed four assists and three steals.

Makenna Williams scored eight points for Raymond (0-3). Williams and Isabel Mora were cited by Gull coach Jason Koski for leadership.

“Making only four field goals in a 32-minute game doesn’t give you much chances to stay close to a team like Elma,” Koski commented. “Our young kids continue to play hard and they are learning the ropes of varsity basketball on the fly.”

Raymond 2 7 5 2 — 16

Elma (57) — Sackrider 8, Bieker, Burgher 5, Olson 8, Bol 1, Johnson 5, Mikel 9, Johnston 16, Rambo 5. FG — 25-61 (.410). FT — 5-10.

TAHOLAH — Denise Dolan scored 21 points and Nettie Mail recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds as Taholah blitzed Chief Leschi in a non-league game Monday at Taholah.

The Chitwhins limited the Warriors to 11 points in the first two quarters.

“We were a little nervous for our first home game,” Taholah coach Karl Braden said. “The second and third quarters, we settled down and played like we should. Give Chief Leschi credit for their hustle.”

Dolan also had eight rebounds, five assists and three steals while Mail collected six assists and four steals. Braden also cited Kayleah McCrory and Niamya Curley-Sailto for fine play.

The Chitwhins (2-0) will be idle until visiting Mary M. Knight on Dec. 15.

BATTLE GROUND — Pitching a shutout in the third quarter, Columbia Adventist went on to spoil Wishkah’s season opener Monday.

The Loggerettes trailed only 20-15 before going scoreless in the third quarter.

“We were out of gas at halftime,” Wishkah coach Dave Busz said. “They were too tall for us — they had four girls 5-10 or over and another two 5-8. To our credit, we played hard.”

Jesse Thompson topped Wishkah with 11 points, seven of those coming in the first quarter. She also had 10 rebounds. Brooke Haskey pulled down 11 rebounds and Megan Hill 10 for the Loggerettes. Erica Bomhoff was cited for ball-handling against the Kodiaks’ press.
