Chokers win in five

Staving off a match point in the fourth set, Grays Harbor College rallied for a 24-26, 25-13, 20-25, 26-24, 15-10, in a NWAC Western Division opener Wednesday at Sam Benn Gym.

Willapa Valley grad Brooke Spoor put down 21 kills, while Teila Kapihe added 15 and Savanna Davis 12 for the Chokers (1-0, 7-21).

“Once we got Brooke going, it got the team going because it opened up our offense,” Choker coach Christine Nelson said. “They couldn’t stop her. She had 21 kills out of 33 attempts, which is really good. We played really well as a team.”

Grays Harbor setter Sara Caraveo had 47 assists and Jayde Jenkins 17 digs.

The Chokers travel to Centralia on Friday.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Bobcats 142, CCA 40

Capturing 11 of 12 events, Aberdeen swamped the Centralia-Chehalis-Adna combine in an Evergreen 2A Conference meet Wednesday at the YMCA of Grays Harbor.

Karli Heikkila won two individual events and also participated on a pair of winning relay units.

Aberdeen coach Jan Simons cited Lexie Portmann for a personal-best time on her 100 free relay split and Camryn Cook, Rylee Watson and Tatum Heikkila for district-qualifying performances.

The Bobcats (2-0 in league) will participate in the Mukilteo Invitational on Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

GIRLS SOCCER

Pirates 2, Wildcats 0

ADNA — Host Adna did all its scoring in the first half to beat Ocosta in a Central League game Wednesday at Adna.

Outshooting the Wildcats, 24-6, the Pirates scored in the first 30 seconds and added their second goal in the 34th minute.

Ocosta goalkeeper Kristi Raffelson made 15 saves and was credited with an outstanding game by coach Mike King.

The Wildcats visit Napavine on Monday.

BOYS GOLF

Grizzlies 172, Bulldogs 189

Josh Burgher and Ryan Cole again shot in the 30s as Hoquiam beat Montesano in a Southwest Washington 1A League match Wednesday at Highland Golf Course.

Burgher carded a one-over-par 36 to take medalist honors, while Cole added a 39.

Ben Wills topped Montesano with a 46.

“I was certainly pleased with the top half of our rotation,” Grizzly coach Larry Dublanko said. “I thought Josh played really well. I felt our guys stayed away from the really big numbers which is a good thing in these matches. “

Montesano faces Elma and Seton Catholic today at Oaksridge Golf Course. The Grizzlies host Kalama on Tuesday.

SHELTON —Aberdeen and Shelton played to a tie in a non-league match Wednesday at Shelton.

Due to a transportation issue, the teams played only one singles and three doubles matches. Aberdeen’s wins came from the doubles teams of Cody Sayres and Aaron Larson and Tanner Williams and Brice Kola.

The Bobcats travel to Chehalis today.

Tumwater meet

TUMWATER — Aberdeen’s Faith Cardenas placed third in the girls portion of a three-school meet against Black Hills and Centralia at the Deschutes River Ranch in Tumwater.

Cardenas was leading for the opening portion of the race, but took a wrong turn at the midway point. She still wound up with a season-best time of 22:13. Black Hills’ Shea Bolton won the race at 21:23.47

Dayln Barragan was Aberdeen’s highest placer in the boys race, taking 13th. Bobcat coach April Meissner lauded the performances of Jordan McKinney (a transfer from Lincoln of Tacoma), Colby Miller, Jeshua Manwell and Brennan Munoz.

“Out of the 11 boys that ran, seven got PRs,” Meissner noted.

The Bobcats will compete in the Seaside Three-Course Challenge on Saturday.
