Aberdeen boys fall from playoff contention

BOYS BASKETBALL

Tigers 62, Bobcats 47

CENTRALIA — Aberdeen’s boys postseason hopes were dealt a fatal blow on Wednesday when they lost on the road to Centralia in Evergreen 2A Conference play on Wednesday.

Aberdeen (2-7, 5-14) needed a win or an upset from Rochester in its game against Black Hills to keep its district hopes alive. Black Hills won at Rochester, 59-44.

The Bobcats almost did their part, taking a 36-35 lead into the fourth quarter. But the Tigers erupted for 27 points in the final period.

Aberdeen head coach Mark Buckman said his team played well early but couldn’t regain control of the game when the Tigers got hot.

“I felt like we stuck to the game plan early,” he said. “If you hold the team 20 points in the first half you give yourself a chance. Momentum changed going into the fourth quarter and we couldn’t recover.”

Ben Dublanko scored 20 points to pace the Bobcats. Buckman highlighted Jeshua Manwell , who had nine rebounds and two blocks against a team with a lot of size on the interior. Javier Bojorge also had six rebounds and four assists to go along with his 10 points.

The Bobcats close out their season at home against Rochester on Friday.

But the Comets rebounded a missed Valley free throw and outletted to Strange, who connected for his only points of the game.

“I don’t know if it was because it was Senior Night, but we just lacked focus and didn’t pick up the 3-point shooters,” Viking coach Jay Pearson said. “They wanted it more than we did.”

The Vikings also lost starting guard Matt Pearson to a sprained ankle in the first quarter.

Senior post Ryon Ashley performed spectacularly for Willapa Valley, with 28 points and eight rebounds. Along with Hunter Kudasik and Patrick Pearson, he was honored in Senior Night ceremonies.

Vikings head coach Colby Rogers said he was glad his team was able to turn up the defensive pressure and get the win after recognizing their seniors pregame.

“We made some adjustments at halftime and the kids really responded out of our press in the third quarter,” he said. “We were able to honor our seniors and took care of business. We played a lot of kids. It was a fun night.”
