Vikings win in five

MENLO — Turning things around in the final two sets, Willapa Valley outlasted South Bend, 25-17, 11-25, 20-25, 25-10, 15-7, in a Pacific League contest Tuesday at Tenoski Gym.

Madison Huber delivered eight kills and Grace Hodel had five kills and five solo blocks for the Vikings (3-2, 5-6).

Following a fast start, Valley coach Lori Snodgrass said her team was plagued by serving and hitting errors in the middle two sets.

“Going into game four, we made a few small defensive adjustments,” Snodgrass said. “Katelyn McGough and Grace Hodel started getting blocks at the net and frustrated their hitters.”

McGough, Hannah Cook and Abbi Hodel had 100 percent serving nights for the Vikings, with the latter two also cited for passing on receiving serves. Sidney Pollard was credited with outstanding setting.

Jessica Sanchez amassed 15 kills and five blocks and was also cited for setting and passing for South Bend (1-3, 3-7). Karley Reidinger had 10 kills, 10 blocks and enjoyed perfect serving. Katelyn Doyle, 23-of-24 serving, brought up eight digs for the Indians.

South Bend connected on 94 percent of its serves, but struggled in receiving serve.

“We’re not consistently playing with passion,” Tribe coach Jackie Sanchez said. “We only passed well 50 percent of the time. I think passing killed us.”

Willapa Valley’s junior varsity also prevailed, 25-16, 25-15.

South Bend hosts Chief Leschi in a makeup match tonight. On Thursday, Willapa Valley visits Ocosta and South Bend entertains Raymond.

Bulldogs in three

MONTESANO — Hannah Hatcher contributed six aces and 22 assists as Montesano remained unbeaten with a 25-4, 25-12, 25-23 win over Tenino in Evergreen 1A League play Tuesday at Bo Griffith Memorial Gym.

Hatcher and Hannah Manley enjoyed 100 percent serving nights for the Bulldogs (6-0, 12-0). Jordan Spradlin led Monte hitters with 12 kills, while Shayla Floch added eight.

Manley and Josie Toyra collected seven digs apiece for Montesano.

“Everybody had an opportunity to play in games one and two,” Monte coach Debbie Gibson reported. “We started slow in game three and took a little time to adjust to a new lineup, but we got back into the swing of things and finished off the match.”

Tuesday’s match doubled as a fundraiser for cancer treatment. The team raised $1,600 that will be donated to the Give Kids the World program based in Florida.

Gibson thanked Roni Sue Toyra for organizing the program and other parents for their efforts.

Monte also won the JV (25-13, 25-14) and C Squad (25-13, 25-22) matches.

The Bulldogs travel to Hoquiam on Thursday.

Grizzlies fall in five

FORKS — A dramatic Hoquiam comeback fell short in a 25-18, 25-23, 27-29, 19-25, 15-9 loss at Forks in an Evergreen 1A League match Tuesday.

The Grizzlies fought off five match points before pulling out the third set and maintained their momentum in the fourth.

“In game five, we kind of had a tough time passing and when that isn’t going well, it’s tough to win a match,” HHS coach Heather Bozich summed up.

Bozich did, however, praise her team for its comeback.

Hoquiam’s Kamimi Papp attained a double-double of sorts with 19 kills and 14 digs. Teammate Paige Folkers had 16 assists. Ashley Paladin contributed 25 digs, while Karlie Krohn had 17 digs for the Grizzlies (2-3, 4-8).

The Grizzlies took the JV match in three sets.

Hoquiam hosts Montesano on Thursday.

Elks win in three

OAKVILLE — Alex Blackburn served five aces as Lake Quinault downed Oakville, 25-17, 25-22, 25-11, in a Coastal League contest Tuesday at Oakville.

Carrie Hartt came off the bench to serve six points, including three aces, in the third set for the Elks (7-1 overall). Claudia Saavedra had three aces.

“It took us a while to warm up,” Quinault coach Sue Kalama said. “We couldn’t get our communication down right, we struggled with that. It got better in the third game.”

The Elks visit Taholah on Thursday and host Mary M. Knight in a makeup match Friday.

Naselle tops Wishkah

WISHKAH — Visiting Naselle withstood a strong Wishkah challenge in the opening set and went to beat the Loggerettes, 25-20, 25-10, 25-13, in a Coastal League contest Tuesday at Brian Eager Memorial Gym.

“The girls came out (in the first set) and played harder and more intense than they ever have before,” Wishkah coach Darci McMaster reported. “It was an exciting, nailbiter of a game. In games two and three, we took ourselves out of it mentally and lacked consistent confidence.”

Megan Hill put down five kills and had 100 percent serving for the Loggerettes.

GIRLS SOCCER

Grizzlies 11, Spartans 0

FORKS — It took less than a minute for Emma Skinner to kick home the game-winner for Hoquiam in this Evergreen 1A League match against Forks.

The Grizzlies (3-2, 6-7) took control early with three goals in the first 10 minutes and rolled to victory.

“In the first 20 minutes we really worked on possession and were lucky to find the net early with that,” Hoquiam coach Drew Grannemann said. “There was a lot of playing time for everyone and a chance to get everybody into some different positions and change it up.”

Skinner intercepted a goal kick and blasted home a shot from 20 yards out to get the scoring started in the first minute. Maya Jump scored on a kick from 25 yards out in the fourth minute and Judy Renteria kicked in a shot off a ball bouncing in the box to make it 3-0 in the eighth minute.

Brooke Bogdanovich added goals in the 21st and 38th minutes to give the Grizzlies a 5-0 halftime lead.

It took less than a minute in the second half for Hoquiam to score again, this time with Jordan Cox kicking the ball into the goal. Bianca Lopez added goals in the 47th and 61st minutes with Jade Cox getting an assist from her sister Jordan Cox on a goal in the 50th minute.

After Alexis Wonderly scored in the 70th minute, Kylee Bagwell kicked the ball home to cap the scoring in the 76th minute.

Grannemann cited Jordan Cox for earning three assists in addition to her goal and Jade Cox and Judy Renteria for their work in goal during the shutout.

Hoquiam hosts Montesano on Thursday.

Monte drops shootout

TENINO — Playing against a packed-in defensive unit, Montesano dominated in shots, but couldn’t convert until the penalty kick shootout when host Tenino won, 0-0 (3-2), in an Evergreen 1A League match on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs (4-1, 8-3-2) had chances on-goal, but the Beavers packed in the penalty area in front of the goal through regulation and overtime. In the shootout, Tenino won on the fifth and final spot kick.

“We had a lot of chances, but most of the chances were out wide,” Montesano assistant coach Rick Denholm said. “When we were in close, we had some, but couldn’t convert. They had just two shots on goal. They played defensively and played for the shootout.”

Samantha Stanfield and Hallie Stubb each converted a penalty kick during the shootout for the Bulldogs.

On Thursday, Montesano travels to Hoquiam.
