BOYS BASKETBALL

Eagles 43, Gulls 37

RAYMOND — Cody Vollan scored 17 points as Elma notched its first win by topping Raymond in non-league action Tuesday.

The Gulls roared back from a 24-12 halftime deficit to tie the game at 28 after three periods, but the Eagles (1-2) regrouped to take command early in the fourth quarter.

“We turned up the pressure on them in the second half and got the momentum,” Raymond coach Mike Tully said. “But we couldn’t keep it going and we were trying to play catch-up at the end.”

Marcus Anderson and Kedrick Collins shared Raymond scoring honors with 12 points apiece.

Elma hosts the touring Templestowe team from Australia on Friday. Raymond (1-1) travels to Life Christian on Thursday.

ROCHESTER — Montesano’s boys won comfortably at Rochester in a non-league game Tuesday night.

Sam Winter came away with 16 points and Trevor Ridgway put up 14 points in the blowout victory for the Bulldogs (2-0)

Monte’s defense started out strong and shut out the Warriors in the first quarter while scoring 20 points of its own.

L.J. Valley and Donovan Albert also made important offensive contributions with six assists each.

The offense came out strong but Monte head coach Doug Galloway said he was even more impressed by his team’s defense, especially in the first quarter.

“We jumped out to a good start and we kept the pressure on,” he said. “Our defense was fantastic tonight. It was just a good team win.”

Monte takes on Castle Rock at home on Friday.

PUYALLUP — Noah Wilkins and Dylan Cooley combined for 55 points as Cascade Christian downed Hoquiam in a non-league game Tuesday at Puyallup.

Wilkins scored 16 of his 28 points in the first quarter. Cooley knocked down eight 3-point shots — two in each quarter — in adding 27.

“We have to do a better job defensively,” Hoquiam coach Curtis Eccles said. “They had some open looks and shot very well.”

Eccles did see some positives on the part of his team (0-3). The Grizzlies committed only 10 turnovers in a fast-paced game and canned 17-of-22 free throws.

Victor James topped Hoquiam with 24 points and seven rebounds. Payton Quintanilla had 12 points and Rayyon Dayton six rebounds for the Grizzlies.

Hoquiam continues its tough non-league schedule Friday at Tumwater.

WESTPORT — Ocosta notched its first Pacific League win of the season by cruising to victory over Northwest Christian on Tuesday.

Ocosta (1-2, 2-2) began to pull away from Northwest Christian early on but really distanced themselves in a third quarter where the Wildcats put up 24 points.

Kobe Beck, Richard Dueber and Cole Hatton all has 12 points in what Ocosta coach Jason Quimby said was a great team win.

“I’ve coached this group for a while and this is the best defensive effort I’ve seen,” he said. “We had three guys with 12 points and it was a good all-around effort.”

Ocosta will take on South Bend in a road game on Saturday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Vikings 70, Hyaks 28

MENLO — Willapa Valley used deadly outside shooting to beat North Beach in a Pacific League contest Tuesday at Tenoski Gym.

The Vikings (2-0, 3-0) canned 8-of-11 from beyond the 3-point arc. Their perimeter shooting helped stake them to a 25-7 lead after one quarter.

“We’ve really been emphasizing that the kids get off to a quick start and we did exactly that,” Valley coach Colby Rogers said.

Britney Patrick scored 15 points and Brooke Friese 14 points for the Vikings. Friese was also commended for her all-around play.

Willapa Valley was guilty of only 10 turnovers.

Lorin Cox scored eight points for North Beach (1-2, 1-3).

On Friday, Willapa Valley challenges league favorite Ilwaco on the road while the Hyaks host Raymond.

WESTPORT — Holding Northwest Christian scoreless in the second half, Ocosta cruised to a lopsided Pacific League victory on Tuesday at Westport.

Ocosta’s defensive pressure took its toll. Kjirstin Hopfer swiped eight steals, while Kaylee Barnum had five and Alivia Marsh four.

“We put on a heavy press and converted that into 41 turnovers for them,” Wildcat coach Jason Barnum reported. “We had 24 steals out of those 41 turnovers.”

Kristi Raffelson scored 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Wildcats (2-0, 3-0). Kaylee Barnum had 13 points and Hopfer 12.

Ocosta travels to South Bend on Friday.
