Montesano boys win at cross country, while four Grays Harbor teams win in girls soccer shutouts

Hoquiam Evergreen League meet

Montesano’s Logan Clements ran under 17 minutes to help lead the Bulldogs to a team victory and win the individual title in an Evergreen 1A League meet at Hoquiam High School on Thursday.

Clements finished the course in personal record time of 16:56.09 to pace the Bulldogs. Montesano had four boys finish in the top 10 to take the meet title with 40 points. Elma finished second with 54 points, followed closely by Hoquiam with 56.

Forks’ Marissa Bailey won the girls half of the meet with a time of 20:52.47 to pace the Spartans to a team title with 21 points. Hoquiam came in second with 34 points.

Montesano’s Connor Parkinson finished third on the boys side, with Blaine Ross taking fourth and Kyle Cox taking ninth.

“The kids were surprised they ran so fast, but they’ve put in the work,” Montesano coach James Edwards said. “I was happy with the performances.”

Hoquiam’s Carlos Juarez ran a career best time of 18:32.60 to take fifth.

“The majority of our team PRd today,” Hoquiam coach Carly Giles said. “They have been working so hard in practice, so to see them PR is awesome. The weather was perfect and it was just a nice day to have a meet.”

The Eagles were paced by a time of 18:35.84 by Dylan Volz.

On the girls side, Hoquiam’s Savannah Lutz ran the fast time for the Grizzlies. The freshman ran a time of 24:16.15 to place third with teammate Payton Parshall on her heels to finish fourth with a time of 24:22.58.

Montesano’s Elizabeth Hunley posted the top time for the Bulldogs with a 26:42.32.

Girls Soccer

Bulldogs 4, Beavers 0

TENINO — Junior forward Samantha Stanfield and freshman forward Abi Parkin scored two goals each to lead Montesano past Tenino in Evergreen 1A League play on Thursday.

Stanfield scored in the 15th minute for a 1-0 lead and added her second goal, a left-footed shot just inside the penalty area, in the 49th minute.

Parkin, who like teammate Anna Ayres moved up from the junior varsity ranks for the contest, scored in the 60th minute and in the 73rd minute, the second on a give-and-go for a breakaway from Lauren Denholm.

“The team worked hard and had some good possession,” Montesano head coach Mike Malpass said. “We put a lot of pressure on the ball.”

On Tuesday, Montesano (2-0, 6-2-1) hosts Hoquiam.

Bobcats 3, Bearcats 0

CHEHALIS — A freshman scoring attack for Aberdeen gave the visiting Bobcats their first Evergreen 2A Conference win of the season in a shutout of Chehalis on Thursday.

Emy Walsh converted a Kyra Gallinger throw-in for a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. Abbi Bradt added a goal in the 55th minute on an assist from Tayler Housden.

In the final minutes of the match, Hannah Jacobs scored on a rebound from Mackenzie Arnold’s shot off the Chehalis goalkeeper.

“Our transition from defense to offense was smoother,” AHS head coach Ryan Housden said. “I hope this is a turnaround point for the season. We have a shot at getting into districts and that is what the girls are playing for.”

Coach Housden cited his defense Megan Auld, Taylor Coker, Amanda Bradt and Alex Wilson for their play.

On Tuesday, Aberdeen (1-2, 2-6) hosts league-leading Tumwater.

Wildcats 3, Cardinals 0

WINLOCK — Visiting Ocosta outshot Winlock by a wide margin and got enough into the net to score a Central 2B League shutout on Thursday night.

Kjirstin Hopfer scored in the 19th minute to start for Ocosta and added a goal in the 45th minute off a Merino shot that hit the crossbar. Katelyn Denney finished the scoring in the 75th minute on a Rebecca Holm assist.

“We just couldn’t get anything on target,” said Ocosta head coach Mike King, whose team outshot the opposition, 50-4. “Their goalkeeper — Katlyn Dunlap — did a really good job with 28 saves.”

Ocosta goalkeeper Kristi Raffelson had two saves for the shutout.

Coach King cited his defense — Mercedes Denney, Jennifer Guevara, Abriana Ness, Anna Samuelson — for their play.

On Tuesday, Ocosta (3-3, 5-3) hosts Kalama.

Grizzlies 8, Spartans 0

Hoquiam scored early and often to roll past Forks in an Evergreen 1A League match at Olympic Stadium on Thursday.

The Grizzlies (1-0, 4-5) grabbed the lead in just the second minute with Taylor Strom scoring on a put back in the second minute. Emma Skinner added a goal off a cross from Casey Mode in the fourth minute and Isabel Hernandez rolled in a goal in the seventh minute to give the Grizzlies a 3-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the contest.

Mode added goals in the 21st and 50th minutes, while Brooke Bogdonavich scored in the 28th and 46th minutes. Judy Renteria capped the scoring in the 53rd minute with a blast from 35 yards out that got past the Forks goalkeeper.

“This is the opening of league play and to come out strong and show people what we can do is a great way to start the league season,” Hoquiam coach Drew Grannemann said.

Hoquiam travels to Montesano on Tuesday.

Boys Tennis

Bobcats 6, Bearcats 0

CHEHALIS — Aberdeen finished off a three-match week by giving Chehalis a “bagel” in an Evergreen 2A Conference match shutout on Thursday afternoon.

The Bobcats won the longest match of the day, a 2 1/2-hour marathon between Ryan Solan and Andrew Painter, with Solan earning a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win. Luis Garcia also ran his singles record to 9-0 with a straight set win.

“This was a good win in Chehalis,” AHS head coach Andy Duffy said. “Ryan and Andrew battled and a couple of points could have gone either way. It was one of the best matches I’ve seen Ryan play.”

On Oct. 10, Aberdeen will finish the regular season by hosting Black Hills.

Hoquiam had three golfers card rounds under 40 to defeat King’s Way Christian in a Southwest Washington 1A League match at Highland Golf Course on Thursday.

Hoquiam’s Josh Burgher and Braden Dayton each fired a round of 38 to share medalist honors for the match with teammate John Sand one stroke back at 39.

“Three in the 30s, any coach would be happy with that,” Hoquiam coach Larry Dublanko said. “I was pleased with the way Josh and Braden played. They were playing partners and fed off each others energy.”

RIDGEFIELD — Montesano’s Austin Peterson carded a career-best score of 38 to help lift Montesano over La Center in a Southwest Washington 1A League match at Tri-Mountain Golf Course on Thursday.

After a double bogey on the first hole, Peterson played the final eight holes one stroke under par. Peterson’s round included a birdie and two eagles, including a tap-in putt for eagle on the final hole.

“I can’t remember the last time I saw a kid as excited as he was today when he hit his last shot,” Montesano coach Lloyd Aldrich said. “I was really fun to watch.”

The Bulldogs counted four scores of 48 or under to take the match with Payson Parker firing a 44, Matthew Plato carding a 46 and Noah Quinn adding a 48.

Montesano travels to Lewis River Golf Course in Woodland to face Kalama on Tuesday.

ELMA — Kalama’s Austin Tucker carded a 39 to earn medalist honors and lead the Chinooks to a win over Elma in a Southwest Washington 1A League match at Oaksridge Golf Course on Thursday.

Elma’s Trace Thompson fired a score of 43 for the low round for the Eagles.

Elma travels to Club Green Meadows in Vancouver to take on King’s Way Christian on Oct. 6.
