South Bend rolls to football victory

Indians 28, Mules 6

SOUTH BEND — Ben Byington rushed for 199 yards and scored three touchdowns on the ground and another by way of a pick-six in Sound Bend’s win over Wahkiakum on Friday night.

The Indians got on the scoreboard first in the opening quarter thanks to an interception returned for a touchdown by Byington. Byington put up another six for the Indians on a 25 yard run, making the score 14-0 going into the second quarter. Another Byington touchdown, this time an 8-yard run, made the score 20-0 going into halftime. The extra point was no good.

After the Mules closed the deficit to 20-6, Byington broke a 22-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Drew Rose converted the 2-point conversion on the ground for the final points of the game.

“Altogether we had 341 yards total rushing,” said head coach Shane Byington. “Our offensive line really did well.”

Byington noted the “incredible blocking” of Jacob Strozyk, who also made a big play on a third down on a reverse in addition to hauling in an interception. Byington also singled out the defensive play of Josiah Markwell who had 16 tackles.

“Overall physical play really stood out, especially up front,” Byington said. “It was a good four quarters of solid line play.”

South Bend (3-0) travels to Mossyrock on Friday.
