Bulldogs win at Rainier

RAINIER — Capturing five titles, Montesano earned the team championship in Rainier’s Sgt. Norton Memorial Tournament on Saturday.

The Bulldogs totaled 200 points to finish 30 1/2 points ahead of runner-up Castle Rock.

Austin Cain, at 160 pounds, Jacob Ellefson at 126, Tony Williams at 138, Carson Klinger at 152 and heavyweight Taylor Rupe won their divisions.

Cain dominated Vashon Island’s Adrian St. Germain, 13-2, in a battle of reigning state champions at 160 pounds. Cain won the state 1A 152-pound championship while St. Germain took the 145-pound title last year.

Rupe, another reigning state champ, registered a takedown in the third round to decision Castle Rock’s John Eslick, 2-0, in the 285-pound final. Eslick was third at state last year.

After avenging a loss to Vashon Island’s Luke Larson in the semifinals, Ellefson won the 126-pound title by injury default when Pateros’ Julio Espino suffered an apparent broken ankle in the final.

Williams needed only 22 seconds to pin Mount Baker’s Jesus Torrero in the 138-pound title bout.

Klinger, returning from a football injury, pinned Castle Rock’s Chris Millward with 37 seconds remaining in their 152-pound title bout.

Montesano’s Tyler Izatt placed second at 132 pounds, dropping a 4-2 decision to Mabton’s Gabriel Mireles. Monte’s Andy Fry tied for third at 106 pounds. The third-fourth place matches were not contested.

“Overall, it was as good as we could hope for,” Monte coach Jeff Klinger said.

Other Harbor results were not immediately reported.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Othello Girls Invitational

OTHELLO — The Aberdeen girls wrestling team made a strong showing at the Othello Girls Invitational on Saturday. The Bobcats placed third in the two-day tournament and had one individual champion as Emily Wharton won the 235-pound title.

Aberdeen scored 144 points as a team to finish just a 1/2 point behind Sunnyside. Host Othello won the team title with 212 points to top the 58-team field.

“We came in knowing that we would see some of the toughest girls in the state with the whole east side of the state represented,” Aberdeen coach Craig Yakovich said. “The goal was to get them in front on anybody they might see over regionals and state. I think we got our girls prepared for the last couple weeks of the season and the postseason.”

Wharton had a bye in the first round, but once she got on the mat she rolled through four straight pins to the title. In the final match, Wharton needed just 46 seconds to pin Decatur’s Gabrielle Boyd.

“The girl shot in underneath Emily and Emily underhooked her and threw her to her back and not too long after that it was over,” Yakovich said.”

Aberdeen’s Alex Wilson (130) and Karli Heikkila (155) each placed fourth in the tournament, while Faith Cardenas (100) placed fifth.

Aberdeen hosts Centralia in a Dual on Wednesday, before traveling to Hoquiam to take on the Grizzlies and Forks on Thursday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Gulls 43, Eagles 37

RAYMOND — Makenna Williams scored six points in the fourth quarter as Raymond survived a tough challenge from Life Christian Academy in a Pacific League game Saturday at Raymond.

Williams snapped a 29-all deadlock with a couple of quick baskets early in the fourth quarter. All five Gull starters scored in that period.

Raymond (8-1, 11-2) used brilliant foul shooting to protect its advantage. The Gulls hit 13 of 14 free throws.

“We showed a lot of poise down the stretch,” Raymond coach Jason Koski said. “We, as a team, did a great job of rebounding. We outrebounded them, 32-30, and they’re a very physical team.”

Raymond’s Mikayla Collins had nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Point guard Cydney Flemetis accumulated six rebounds, four assists and three steals and was cited by Koski for her decision-making.

“We played one of the best first quarters we played all year, but North Beach is seasoned and well-coached and they didn’t flinch and kept fighting the whole game,” Willapa Valley coach Colby Rodgers said. “The real difference was free-throw shooting.”

BOYS SWIMMING

South Sound Relays

OLYMPIA — Aberdeen took on nearly all of the South Sound’s boys swimming teams on Saturday afternoon at the South Sound Relays at The Evergreen State College.

The Bobcats had two relays crack into the top-five places, while five other relays finished in the top 10 in the annual relay meet.

“This meet is always a chance to see where the boys are as we head into the peak of the season,” AHS head coach Angie Durr said. “They have been working very hard in practice over the last few weeks and it is gratifying to see so many of them drop time in multiple races. Almost the whole team had a best time in at least one event today.”

The 4×100 medley relay took fifth at 4:29.0 with Conner Gates, Kai Kawashima, Sage Bridges and Robby Lewis swimming. Gates, Bridges and Lewis returned for the 4×50 freestyle relay, with Jared Durr taking Kawashima’s spot.

Coach Durr cited Jordan Rounsivill for his swims in the 50 free and 100 backstroke, Tanner Williams for his swim in the backstroke relay and Trevor Mullin for his swims in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke relays.
