Roundup: Hoquiam Bombers softball earns first tournament title

Bombers bounce Tigard (Ore.) 14-2 in championship game of USSSA ‘May Celebration’ Tournament

OLYMPIA — The Hoquiam Bombers 10-and-under youth softball team battled back from the No. 3 spot to earn a 14-2 victory over the Tigard (Oregon) Crush in the championship game of the United States Specialty Sports Association’s ‘May Celebration’ Youth Softball Tournament on Sunday, May 6.

The tournament title was the first for the Bombers program.

On Saturday, May 5, the Bombers defeated both the GH Crushers and Olympia Warriors before losing to Tigard, earning Hoquiam the third seed entering Sunday’s bracket play.

The Bombers knocked out local rivals, the Montesano Bulldogs and Elma Explosion, to earn a rematch against Tigard in Sunday’s championship game.

“Our girls came to play ball that day,” said Bombers team manager Kayla Dhooghe about the title-game victory. “They did not let anyone get in the way. Our pitching and bats were hot.”

TUMWATER — Montesano’s Macey Wecker is six strokes back of the top spot entering Tuesday’s final round at the 1A/2B District IV Girls Golf Championship at Tumwater Valley Golf Course.

Wecker, the defending district champion, shot a round of 83 on day one and sits behind La Center’s Taylor Entenman (77).

Monte’s Glory Grubb (88), McKenna Miller (93) and Hoquiam’s Bailey Smith (93) round out the top five after the first day of competition.

Hoquiam soccer season ends

MONTESANO — The Hoquiam boys soccer team’s playoff run ended sooner than hoped after suffering a 2-1 loss to White Salmon in a 1A District playoff elimination game on Saturday.

The Grizzlies finish the season 11-4 and were co-Evergreen 1A league champions with Forks.

Monte loses to Puyallup

MONTESANO — The Vikings scored a pair of runs in the second, third and fourth innings to open up a 6-0 lead en route to handing Montesano its third loss of the season by a score of 7-2 on Monday.

Olivia Ellingson and Sidney Booth each homered for the Vikings, a 4A power with a 19-1 record on the season.

Down 7-0 in the sixth, Monte (16-3) plated a pair of runs on a run-scoring single by Jessica Stanfield followed by an RBI ground-out from Kate Klingler.

The Bulldogs face Stevenson at noon on Wednesday in the first round of the 1A District playoffs at Borst Park in Centralia.
