Raymond out of state volleyball tournament

Gulls split their first two matches

YAKIMA — Raymond fell one win shy of a state trophy in the state Class 2B Volleyball Tournament at the Yakima SunDome.

La Conner swept the Gulls, 25-19, 25-21, 25-19, in a loser-out contest Friday. With the victory, La Conner clinched a state trophy and went on to place eighth at state.

Raymond completed its season with a 15-7 record. The Gulls made their first state appearance since 2004.

On Thursday, Raymond opened the tournament with a 25-21, 25-17, 25-15 loss to Brewster but stayed alive by outlasting Walla Walla Valley Academy, 12-25, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12.

Karlee Freeman pounded out 30 kills against Walla Walla Valley Academy. Despite the win, Raymond coach Bob Swogger said his team was far from its best form.

“It was probably one of the worst wins I’ve ever had,” Swogger said. “I don’t know why we won this one. Maybe fate intervened. Karlee was our leader. She stepped up when everybody else was struggling.”

Gull setter Makenna Williams was commended for hustle.

In contrast to the second contest, Swogger believed the Gulls played well against Brewster.

“We were competing well and doing great things (in the first set),” the Raymond coach said. “When they snuck that set out, I think we lost a little bit of confidence. They’re a talented team. They have good height, they moved pretty well and they play good defense. We had a hard time finding the floor against them.”

Freeman delivered 17 kills and Maddi Murray five for the Gulls in this match.
