BROOKLYN — Luis Nieves erupted for 30 points as North River beat Oakville for the first time since 2008 in a Coastal 1B League game Friday at Brooklyn.

Reaping the benefits of a pressure defense, the Mustangs (2-5 in league) blasted to a 45-21 halftime lead.

“Luis Nieves had a stellar game offensively and defensively,” North River coach Sean Pierson said. “Quick hands, quick feet. I’ve never seen him play better.”

The Vikings (12-3, 15-3) roared to a 26-8 lead after one quarter. The Wildcats (5-9, 8-10) performed respectably over the next two periods before Valley pulled away with a 23-point fourth quarter.

“One of the better first quarters we’ve played this season,” Viking coach Jay Pearson said. “We were pushing the ball and attacking the basket.”

“We competed really well from the middle of the first quarter to the middle of the third quarter, but we didn’t match their intensity at the beginning of the game,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby said.

Ryon Ashley (16 points, 16 rebounds) and Peter Hamilton (11 points, 14 boards) each had double-doubles for the Vikings. Carter Pearson, the cousin of starting point guard Matt Pearson, was cited for his contributions off the bench.

TAHOLAH — Breaking open a tight game in the second half, Taholah remained unbeaten in Coastal 1B League play by topping Lake Quinault on Friday at Taholah.

Possibly leg-weary from a long trip to Neah Bay the previous night, the Chitwhins led by only four, 26-22, at the half. They outscored the Elks 21-8 in the third quarter.

Jayson Mowitch topped Taholah with 16 points, six steals and three assists. Jesse Purdy and Jauvon James-Juneau added 12 points apiece. Eli Waugh led Chitwhin rebounders with nine, two more than teammate Jim Billie.

RAYMOND — Exploding for 46 points in the second half, Raymond pulled away from South Bend in a Pacific 2B League contest Friday at Raymond.

After being outhustled (in the words of Raymond coach Mike Tully) by South Bend in the first half, the Gulls began attacking the Tribe’s zone defense more effectively in the final two quarters.

“Once the dam broke, we started rolling — moving the ball well, hitting the open guy,” Tully said. “Things started clicking.”

Raymond’s Devine Souvannavanh turned in a fine all-around performance with 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists, four steals and four blocked shots. Marcus Anderson contributed 13 points and two blocked shots for the Gulls (5-9, 7-11).

Drew Rose paced South Bend (1-3, 2-16) with 14 points.

Down by 10 with about three minutes left, the Hyaks rallied to within four in the final minute but missed a shot that would have narrowed the gap to two.

Steven Sotomish had 20 points and five assists for the Hyaks, while teammate Rodney Washington contributed six rebounds and five assists. North Beach coach Larry Moore cited Tavo Muro for his hustle off the bench.

TAHOLAH— On the strength of a double-double performance from Netty Mail, Taholah’s girls soared past Lake Quinault 68-31 at home on Friday.

Taholah (8-0, 12-3) was still licking its wounds from a lopsided 79-34 loss to Neah Bay on Thursday but got a big game from Mail, who put up 20 points and 20 rebounds.

“We took a beating last night so the girls were upset and looking forward to tonights game,” Taholah coach Karl Braden said. “We still have not put together a full, all-around game and I think we’re getting close to having it.”

Lake Quinault head coach Travis Carstensen was disappointed in his team’s shooting but highlighted Kat Neeland and Christen Saavedra who had 11 and nine rebounds, respectively.

FORKS — Iesha Johnson’s 3-point basket with four seconds remaining gave Forks an upset win over Hoquiam in an Evergreen 1A League game Friday at Forks.

The Grizzlies (3-4, 9-10) owned a five-point lead and had the ball with less than a minute remaining. But the Spartans made their last four shots — two of them 3-pointers — while the Grizzlies missed a free throw and were called for a disputed three-second violation down the stretch.

Hoquiam regained the lead, at 54-52, on a Maya Jump basket with about 20 seconds left. That set up Johnson’s winning basket.

Forks knocked down seven 3-pointers.

“That was the difference,” HHS coach Mark Maxfield said.

WISHKAH — Mary M. Knight withstood a 23-point assault by Wishkah’s Erica Bomhoff for a Coastal 1B League victory on Friday at Brian Eager Memorial Gym.

Bomhoff did most of her damage in the first half in helping the Loggerettes (1-6 in league) forge a 23-all standoff at the half.

“She was fearless driving to the basket tonight,” Wishkah interim head coach Kristi Christian said. “We kind of lost momentum in the second half.”

Brooke Haskey contributed 15 rebounds and three steals and Jesse Thompson 11 rebounds for Wishkah.
