Seagulls secure spot in state volleyball tourney; local bowler scores 800 series at Rainier Lanes

The Raymond Seagulls earned a berth in the girls volleyball state tournament after picking up two wins to advance to the semifinal round of the 2B District 4 Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 30, in Raymond.

The Seagulls (14-1 overall, 11-0 2B Pacific) opened the tournament as the Pacific League’s No. 1 seed and quickly dispatched of Winlock in the first round 25-8, 25-5 and 25-8.

“Overall, we played well and won most of the game from behind the service line,” Raymond head coach Bob Swogger said. “I’m proud of how we kept our focus and kept our foot down on the gas pedal.”

From there, the Seagulls advanced to the district quarterfinal round to face Onalaska with a spot in the state tournament on the line.

The Loggers (12-5) built up a sizable first-set lead, as Raymond started slow and struggled in the passing game.

But after a 25-22 loss in the first game, the Seagulls got hot to sweep the next three sets 25-12, 25-12 and 25-18 to secure a trip to the 2B State Tournament Nov. 11-12 at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

“We shook the nerves off and played the way we are capable of,” Swogger said.

Senior outside hitter Kyra Gardner “had a monster game,” according to Swogger, recording 31 kills to go along with 23 digs.
