Weather causes postponements for local prep sports teams

Myrtle Street Rivalry games shelved but Pearson Classic set for Wednesday

UPDATE: Information added for Hoquiam Grizzly Stocking Stuffer Wrestling Tournament.

Recent winter snowstorms have caused multiple postponements of Twin Harbors sporting events.

Schools across Grays Harbor and Pacific counties have postponed girls and boys basketball games and wrestling meets this week due to the near foot of snow that has blanketed the state earlier in the week.

Aberdeen and Hoquiam have postponed Myrtle Street Rivalry boys and girls basketball games set for Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. No rescheduled date has yet to be determined.

The Grizzly Stocking Stuffer Girls Wrestling Tournament that was scheduled for Wednesday at Hoquiam High School has also been postponed.

All Montesano High School prep sports competitions have been postponed for the remainder of the week and Elma High School has canceled games for Tuesday and Wednesday, with Thursday’s scheduled boys basketball game at Centralia to be determined.

In the 2B classification, both Raymond’s boys and girls basketball games on Tuesday and Wednesday have been postponed as has the Taholah at North Beach boys and girls games originally scheduled for Wednesday.

One Pacific County school will be hosting its annual holiday basketball invitational, at least for one day.

The Willapa Valley High School Jack Q. Pearson Holiday Classic will take place on Wednesday, and possibly Thursday, after officials from several schools decided to make the trip to Menlo.

“We’d like to get it in,” Willapa Valley co-athletic director and head boys basketball coach Jay Pearson said. “The word is other schools still want to do it. The problem is getting them here.”

After a 2 p.m. Tuesday meeting with school officials from Winlock, Toutle Lake, Adna, Naselle and Oakville, the decision was made to move the games to earlier tip-off times for Wednesday, with Thursday’s games tentatively scheduled based on weather conditions.

“We moved the games up in the schedule so people could get home safe,” Vikings head girls basketball coach and co-athletic director John Peterson said. “We’re going day by day.”
