Ocosta boys team places fifth out of 11 teams in bronze varsity race

PREP CROSS COUNTRY

Ocosta boys places 5th in Lakewood

The Ocosta Wildcats boys cross country team placed fifth out of 11 teams in the bronze varsity race at the 20th Annual Fort Steliacoom Invitational in Lakewood on Saturday.

Ocosta senior Alex Bailey (19:04.90), freshman Dylan Todd (19:11.60) and senior Daniel Quinby (19:34.00) led the way for the Wildcats, placing 19th, 21st, and 29th, respectively.

Ocosta finished with 130 points. Central Catholic won the race with a score of 24.

In the girls bronze medal race, Ocosta’s Natalie Cain 22:56.10, 22nd) and Kjirstin Hopfer (23:15.50) lead the Wildcats, which did not have enough competitors to qualify for the team competition.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Ocosta places 3rd at Adna tourney

The Ocosta Wildcats took third place at the Adna Tournament on Saturday.

Emily Snider led the Wildcats with 39 assists in the one-day tournament. She also had six kills and four aces.

Kaylee Barnum recorded a team-high 35 kills in Adna and also had 10 aces for the day.

Layne Martin (19 kills, 16 assists) and Kylee Poirier (13 kills, 8 solo blocks) also contributed for Ocosta.

Naselle placed first in the tournament while host Adna took second. Rainier finished in fourth place.

Centralia 6, Aberdeen 0

The Aberdeen Bobcats tennis team were swept by Centralia on Friday in Centralia.

Aberdeen’s best chance to win a match came in the No. 1 singles match, where Bobcat Cody Sayres rebounded from a first-set loss to Centralia’s Joltan Lopez to take the second set, 6-4. He was down 5-3 in the third set when the match was called due to rain.

In the third doubles match, Aberdeen’s Jared Erwin and Kai Kawishima lost the first set and were tied in the second set, 6-6, before the match was called to to wet weather.

Singles — Lopez (Centralia) defeated Sayres (Aberdeen) 6-4, 4-6, 5-3 (match called due to rain); London Kant (C) def. Brice Kola (A) 6-2, 6-4; John McKiernan (C) def. Tanner Fluery (A) 6-3, 6-4.

King’s Way Christian beats Monte, Elma

The King’s Way Christian Knights shot the lowest team score to win a three-way meet over Elma and Montesano on Friday at Oaksridge Golf Course.

The Knights finished with a score of 165.

Monte was second at 173 followed by Elma at 204.

PREP SOCCER

Kalama 1, Ocosta 0

The Ocosta Wildcats fell to Kalama, 1-0, Friday in Westport. An outstanding performance by senior goalkeeper Kristi Raffelson kept this one close.

Ocosta goalkeeper Kristi Raffelson stopped 12 shots, several with diving or leaping grabs, to keep the Wildcats in the game. Kalama broke the scoreless tie on a breakaway in the 63rd minute, capitalizing on an Ocosta turnover at midfield.

Ocosta defenders Kianna Battiste, Mercedes Denny, Jennifer Guevara, Davina Andersen and Piper Furford were noted for strong play.

“We couldn’t connect on our passes and couldn’t pull the trigger enough on offense,” Ocosta head coach Mike King lamented. “On the bright side, we played the two top teams in the state tough, now we can get some momentum going over the next three weeks before we play them again.”
