GIRLS PREP GOLF

Elma 195, Montesano 195

Recording the top four scores for two different golf teams rarely ends as it did when Elma and Montesano met up on Thursday.

But after a 9-hole meet featuring the 1A-class’ top two golfers, the Eagles and Bulldogs ended in a 195-195 draw at the Grays Harbor Country Club in Aberdeen.

Reigning 1A State champion Hailey Blancas led Montesano with a score of 38 – the lowest score of the match – to earn Medalist honors.

Elma’s Camberly Burgess and Monte’s Jessie LaLonde had the second-lowest scores for their respective teams, both shooting a 49.

Aubrey Moore (50) and Sophia Hamilton (56) rounded out Elma team score while Maggi Kupka (53) and Lucy Scott (55) were on the scoreboard for Monte.

With no tie-breaker in place, the match ended in a rare tie.

“The girls played strong tee to green, but struggled to get the pace of the greens,” Elma assistant head coach Ryan Moore said of his team. “Let a few too many short putts get away from them. Proud of how they battled to the end of the round.”

Monte takes on Seton Catholic at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Tri-Mountain Golf Course in Ridgefield.

BOYS PREP SOCCER

Aberdeen 2, Ridgefield 1

With its season hanging in the balance, the Aberdeen Bobcats scored two clutch goals to beat Ridgefield 2-1 in the 2A District 4 “pigtail” play-in game on Thursday in Ridgefield.

Trailing 1-0 late in the game after the Spudders (9-8 overall) converted a penalty kick in the 64th minute, Aberdeen pressed in hopes of avoiding elimination.

With 2:20 left to play, Aberdeen midfielder Leo Garcia played a through ball to forward Elmer Torres, who sent a back-heel pass to forward Evan Cone.

Cone took a set-up touch then placed a shot past the Ridgefield keeper and into the right side of the net to tie the game.

Late into stoppage time, Aberdeen completed the thrilling comeback when some pinpoint passing led to Cone dropping a pass to senior midfielder Juan Serrano, who lasered a 27-yard shot into the lower left corner of the net for a 2-1 lead.

The Bobcats defense held off a late Ridgefield rush to preserve the win and punch Aberdeen’s ticket into the district tournament.

“All season our team has never given up no matter how dire the situation and has had some tough losses when they deserved better,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “Tonight, it all payed off with a great win on the road against a good Ridgefield team. I couldn’t be prouder of the boys’ effort and determination.”

Aberdeen plays at Columbia River in a rematch of last season’s district-title game in a first-round match at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
