Prep Roundup: Big inning leads to Montesano mercy-rule victory over University Prep

A big inning led to a Montesano mercy-rule victory as we review prep sports baseball and softball games from Monday.

PREP BASEBALL

Montesano 10, University Prep 0

Montesano scored six runs in the second inning en route to a 10-0 six-inning win over University Prep on Monday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (5-1 overall) took a 7-0 lead at the conclusion of the second frame, with the big blow coming when two runs scored on a Toren Crites single followed by an error.

Leading 8-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Monte earned the walk-off, mercy-rule victory on Crites’ second RBI single of the game followed by a run-scoring bunt by Kole Kjesbu to give Monte the 10-0 win.

Monte senior Skylar Bove allowed no runs on just two hits with a pair of walks and seven strikeouts in six innings pitched.

Forty-six of Bove’s 72 pitches were for strikes (64%).

Crites led Monte with two hits and three RBI while Jaxson Wilson continued his hot start to the season, going 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Monte faces Hoquiam in a double headers scheduled to start at noon on Saturday in Hoquiam.

PREP SOFTBALL

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 3, Rochester 2

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley’s Lauren Emery pitched a gem in leading the Titans to a 3-2 win over Rochester on Monday in Pe Ell.

The Titans (4-0) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on an error and an fielder’s choice RBI groundout by Rilyn Channell.

After Rochester tied the game with two runs in the top of the fifth, a Warriors error on a hard ground ball from Channell allowed Jillian Hodel to score as PWV regained the lead at 3-2.

Emery did the rest, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out 11 in earning the complete-game victory.

Hodel led PWV with a perfect 3-for-3 day at the dish.

The Titans host Chief Leschi in a double header starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
