GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Montesano 70, Klahowya 27

Montesano showed no signs of a Christmas hangover with a 70-27 win over Klahowya on Wednesday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (4-6 overall) wasted little time in taking a double-digit lead thanks in large part to a defense that held the Eagles to six points in the first quarter.

“It’s really the second complete game where we’ve seen the defensive intensity we like to see for 32 minutes,” Monte head coach Mark Mansfield said. “We’re playing much harder. We’ve talked from day one that how well we are going to do it’s going to depend on how well we are going to defend. We’ve done a good job the last couple games with that.”

The Bulldogs led by 28 points at halftime and didn’t allow Klahowya to break 20 points until late in the third quarter.

Monte was led by freshman point guard Tieander Olson, who had 21 points on 10-of-18 (56%) shooting to go along with four rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Sophomore forward Jillie Dalan had 17 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and four steals for a Bulldogs team that had 18 steals on the evening.

The Bulldogs’ Lex Stanfield added 12 points, four rebounds and four steals as Monte shot 32 of 64 from the floor (50%).

Mansfield was pleased his team played so well from the get-go after returning from a short Christmas break.

“I was a little surprised. We did not have a good practice yesterday. We looked like we had taken three days off and we were just sluggish,” he said. “We talked about it before the game that we needed to come out with defensive intensity and set the tone and they did it. They really responded well.”

Morton-White Pass 58, Hoquiam 29

Too many turnovers and not enough scoring led to Hoquiam’s 58-29 loss to Morton-White Pass at the Raymond New Year’s Classic on Thursday in Raymond.

Hoquiam (2-5) failed to crack double-digit points in any quarter and committed 48 turnovers in the loss, 36 of those in a second half where the Grizzlies were outscored 32-17.

”Tonight was a struggle in all aspects of the game. (The turnovers) are just unacceptable,” Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan said. “All credit to Morton-White Pass as they were active and relentless playing as a well-conditioned team.”

Seven different Grizzlies committed at least five turnovers in the game.

Hoquiam was led by Dylan Little with nine points as the Grizzlies shot 26% from the field on 11-of-42 shooting.

Raymond-South Bend 57, Naselle 17

Lockdown defense was the key for Raymond-South Bend in a 57-17 win over Naselle at the Raymond New Year’s Classic on Thursday at Raymond High School.

Despite a slow start on offense, the Ravens (7-3) held the Comets to just 16 points in the first half.

”Good thing our kids play solid defense because offensively, mainly in the first half, we looked like we forgot how to play that side of the ball,” RSB head coach Jason Koski said. “Once we figured out that the game is easier when you use your teammates on offense, we started having some success.”

Emma Glazier led the Ravens with 12 points, seven rebounds and seven steals.

RSB’s Kassie Koski had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Ava Baugher had 11 rebounds for a Ravens team that held a 48-21 advantage on the boards.

As a team, the Ravens had 14 assists on 22 field goals, committed just 10 fouls in the game and turned the ball over just five times in the second half.

“Really happy with only five turnovers in the second half after opening the first half with 11,” Coach Koski said. “One other good team stat was we only committed 10 team fouls on the night, which shows good team discipline, especially with how aggressively we play.”

RSB hosts Hoquiam at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

Naselle 6 2 3 3 – 17

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL

Hoquiam 56, Kalama 40

Hoquiam shook off some Christmas rust en route to a 56-40 win over Kalama on Thursday at the Raymond New Year’s Classic at Raymond High School.

Despite jumping out to a 13-point lead at halftime, Hoquiam (5-3) left points on the floor with several missed layups.

“To me, the story of the game was the kids played really hard,” Hoquiam head coach Jeff Niemi said. “We had trouble finishing. Winter-break rust, very common.”

Hoquiam continued to play with energy and dominated the glass – holding a 21-7 offensive rebounding advantage – en route to the victory.

“I challenged them at halftime to kind of pick it up a little bit and I thought our effort was really good in the second half,” Coach Niemi said. “We didn’t shoot the ball that much better, but we just really played hard.”

Grizzlies senior Zander Jump led Hoquiam with 22 points, eight rebounds five steals and two assists.

Luke Niemi scored 12 points while Chris Bryson and Aiden Butcher scored nine and seven rebounds, respectively, for Hoquiam.

The Grizzlies take on Raymond at 7 p.m. Friday in Raymond.

Raymond (5-4) trailed 33-24 at the half and cut the deficit to five points multiple times in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

“We got ourselves in a hole early, and we just couldn’t dig ourselves out,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “We just had too many defensive breakdowns. Luckily, they were mistakes that are fixable. Hopefully, we can make the quick turnaround and play better tomorrow.”
