Chokers place eighth at first spring event

The Grays Harbor Chokers men’s golf team opened its 2024 spring season by placing eighth overall at the University of Puget Sound Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Oakbrook Golf Club in Lakewood.

The Chokers struggled in Friday’s wet and windy first round of play, with no GHC golfer shooting below 82 for an 18-hole round.

But led by a 71 from Rasmus Tamker, the Chokers rallied to score a total of 334 and placed eighth overall despite competing with just four golfers.

Tamker’s 71 was the second-lowest round of the event and was highlighted by two birdies and an eagle on the No. 9 hole to place ninth on the individual leaderboard.

Cole Wasson knocked 10 strokes off his Day 1 total to shoot a 74 in the final round. Wasson had three birdies in Round 2 and placed 15th overall.

Cole’s brother and Chokers teammate Brett Wasson shot a 77 in the second round – including two birdies – to finish 34th overall.

The Chokers’ Hayden Hayes shot an 82 and an 85 to place 34th.

“The team finished first day not like we planned. Very adverse conditions –rain, cold and wind. I am very proud how they rallied in second round,” GHC head coach Ann Swanson said. “The team worked very hard over the winter and we are excited for a wonderful spring season.”

GHC will compete in the Simpson University Invitational March 24-26 in Redding, California.

GHC Results

Rasmus Tamker 154 (83-71), Cole Wasson 158 (84-74), Brett Wasson 162 (85-77), Hayden Hayes 167 (82-85).
