Sally Jane (Norris) Hegg

Sally Jane (Norris) Hegg (Norris) was born on Jan. 9, 1935.

Sally Jane (Norris) Hegg (Norris) was born on Jan. 9, 1935, to George and Ellen Norris at home in Hoquiam, Washington. Sally graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1954.

At Hoquiam High School, Sally was very involved in student activities, including as a class officer and queen of the Mother’s Day Tea. During this time, she started dating her classmate and the love of her life, Peter Hegg. While Pete attended college in Bellingham, Sally went to Grays Harbor College, then moved to Everett where she worked for Scott Paper Company. Before Pete’s senior year, they were married on Aug. 31, 1957.

After college, the couple moved back to Hoquiam where they started their family.

Sally is survived by her children, Sheryl, Mark (Marleen) and Ken (Phen). During this time, Sally was involved in her family’s activities. She was a Cub Schout and Blue Bird leader. She was the room mom and volunteered to help in school and community activities. Sally taught Sunday school and was active in the United Methodist Church. After the children were in school, Sally began working for the Hoquiam School District. She particularly enjoyed working as an assistant in the high school library.

When Pete’s career required the family to move to Eatonville, she made sure that everyone was settled in before she started a job as the office manager at the Eatonville Dispatch. After working there for several years, she worked as a para educator for the Eatonville School District. Sally enjoyed her time in Eatonville and made some great friends while there.

Then, in 1983, they returned to Hoquiam where Sally enjoyed being near her family and life-long friends. Many of Sally’s family members lived nearby. Sally was preceded in death by her siblings: Marian, Patricia, George Jr., Charles, Walter, Peggy, Phyllis and Joan. She is survived by her youngest sister, Janice Smith.

In the 1990s the Heggs enjoyed traveling. They went to Mariner’s spring training in Arizona on several occasions. They also travelled to France to visit their son, Ken. They also enjoyed touring Spain, Ireland, Scotland and England with friends.

Sally was a very loving and involved grandmother to her grandsons, Jeffrey and Casey. The kids enjoyed many overnight visits and the Heggs travelled often to attend school and sporting events. She is also survived by grandchildren, Laurence and Kurt. and by five great-granddaughters.

She enjoyed volunteering at the Food Bank and visiting friends. Sally greeted everyone with her beautiful smile and twinkling blue eyes.

Sally passed away peacefully on May 31, 2021, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Although her memory and ability to communicate had gone, Sally maintained her kind and gentle spirit. Pete visited her daily at Pacific Care in Hoquiam where Sally was treated with great respect and received loving care.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Pacific Care Center, the American Diabetes Foundation or Alzheimer’s Research.

A celebration of Sally’s life will be held later this summer with the hope that family members from outside of the country will be able to travel to Hoquiam.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary. Private urn committal will be held at Hoquiam’s Sunset Memorial Park.
