Mary Katherine Moore, 53, of Montesano, passed away at home that she shared with her parents, on Sept. 21, 2022.

Mary was a teacher for 20 years. She started her teaching career in Morongo Valley, California, then moved back to Washington to work in Orting, then Wapato. She guided and inspired so many students during her career. She had fond memories of students returning years later after high school graduation to thank her for support, kindness and encouragement.

Summers spent at her grandparents’ home with family and friends on Harstine Island were some of Mary’s best times. She enjoyed the swimming pool and jumping in the cold Puget Sound. Spending time with cousins, exploring the beach and woods held a special place in her heart. She also loved giving her cousins island tours by rowboat.

Mary recently took up gardening and cultivated beautiful flowers and vegetables. She started most plants by seed in her small greenhouse and often shared her plants and produce with family. Mary was a great cook and baker and enjoyed making dinners and treats for family and friends. Mary enjoyed traveling locally, with a special fondness for the Oregon coast.

Mary’s absolute love was for her nieces, Maddie and Mackenzie Moore. She had a special relationship with her nieces, they were the best of friends and rarely went a day without talking. They spent a great deal of time together, went on short vacations, supported each other through hardship and joy. They shared her love of humor and animals.

Bringing Mary continuous joy, were her dogs Mya and Jr. They were her life happiness and her heart. She enjoyed caring for them, loving on them and being their mom. They remain at home with her parents, being loved by the whole family.

Mary was admired for her sense of humor, big heart, passion of animals, especially her nieces’ beagles, and her ability to comfort, protect and support all those around her. She was a Seahawks fan and yelled at the TV like she owned the team. She loved Christmas and cherished giving useful gifts that always inspired a day of humor following the unwrapping ceremony. She loved being surrounded by family and this gave her comfort and happiness. She loved to sing and was known for her delightful renditions of Elvis songs.

Mary is survived by her parents, Ron and Jeanette Moore of Montesano, sister Carrie Moore, nieces Mackenzie and Maddie Moore of Tacoma, sister Mindy Sturgill (Sean) and stepchildren James and Taylor Sturgill of Tenino. She is also survived by her fur babies, Mya and Jr.

A celebration of life will be held at the Central Park Baptist Church, Saturday Nov. 5 at 11 a.m.
