Thursday Roundup: Monte beats Elma in straight sets, keeps pace with Hoquiam

Also: Hoquiam’s Higgins and Roloff, North Beach’s Baggaley win league cross country titles

As the fall prep sports season enters the home stretch, several Twin Harbors teams were competing for playoff seeding while local cross-country athletes were running for a league title as we take a look at a busy Thursday filled with action.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Montesano 3, Elma 0

Montesano beat Elma in straight sets on Thursday at Elma High School.

The Bulldogs (9-6 overall, 6-1 1A Evergreen) kept pace with first-place Hoquiam with the 25-8, 25-18 and 25-15 victory.

Monte was led by Ashlynn Devereaux (13 kills) and got six kills apiece from Kalia Hatton and Maia Young.

The Bulldogs had 36 kills on the evening, administered mostly by setters Jordan Karr and Karissa Otterstetter with 19 and 13 assists, respectively.

“The team played great defense tonight which carried over to a productive, consistent offensive attack,” Monte head coach Pat Pace said.

Elma (7-7, 3-4) was led by Brooklyne Swarts (18 digs) and Ally Warren (14 digs).

“We started the match slow tonight and Montesano came out strong,” Elma head coach Kendra Dunn said. “We were able to pick it up in the second set. Brooklyne and Ally played great defense and got a lot of ups but were unable to match Montesano’s intensity.”

The Bulldogs sit a half game behind Hoquiam for the league’s top spot and will face WF West in a non-league matchup at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Chehalis.

Elma is locked in as the league’s No. 3 playoff seed and will face Aberdeen in a non-league contest scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Elma High School.

Hoquiam 3, Eatonville 0

Hoquiam kept its perfect record intact with a straight-set victory over Eatonville on Thursday in Eatonville.

The 11th-ranked Grizzlies (12-0, 6-0 1A Evergreen) cruised to a 25-6-25-8 and 25-11 victory.

“We started off fast with a lot of energy,” Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich said. “We were passing really well, which kept us in system and limited the free balls.”

Senior setter Ella Folkers had 29 assists, setting up Hoquiam’s heavy hitters in Faith Prosch (10 kills), Ashlinn Cady (6 kills, 11 digs), Kristina Goulet (7 kills) and Chloe Kennedy (5 kills, 5 aces, 22-22 service, 3 solo blocks).

Hoquiam libero Graci Bonney-Spradlin added 11 digs for the Grizzlies defense.

Hoquiam sits a half-game ahead of Montesano for the top spot in the 1A Evergreen League heading into the home stretch of the regular season.

The Grizzlies played 2B powerhouse Raymond in a non-league match at 6 p.m. on Monday in Hoquiam, after The Daily World went to press.

Raymond 3, North Beach 0

Raymond locked up the 2B Pacific League title with a straight-set victory over North Beach on Thursday in Ocean Shores.

Ninth-ranked Raymond (13-2, 11-0 2B Pacific) won 25-11, 25-16 and 25-18 and was led by Alia Enlow (12 kills), Karsyn Freeman (6 kills), Ava Baigher (6 kills) and Kyndal Koski (27 digs, 100% service).

“We played well. Our communication was great and we had good energy, both things we have keyed in on,” Raymond head coach Julie Jewell said. “North Beach did a good job of challenging us with a couple of their servers.”

Raymond’s JV won 25-6 and 25-21 Thursday afternoon.

The Seagulls tested themselves ahead of the 2B District 4 Tournament with a non-league matchup against undefeated 1A power Hoquiam at 6 p.m. Monday in Hoquiam, after The Daily World goes to press.

South Bend 3, Chief Leschi 0

South Bend picked up an important league win in downing Chief Leschi in straight sets on Thursday in South Bend.

South Bend (4-8, 4-6 2B Pacific) won 25-9, 25-18 and 25-19.

“We implemented a new lineup tonight and I thought our team chemistry was great,” South Bend head coach Kelsey Staats said. “We served aggressively.”

South Bend was led by setter Berklee Morley (17-18 service, 7 aces), senior Raydynn Morley (8 aces) and senior Makaylee Kuiken (13 digs).

South Bend hosts North Beach at 7 p.m. on Monday after The Daily World goes to press, and currently sits a half game behind the Hyaks for fourth place in the league standings.

Ocosta 3, Ilwaco 0

Ocosta gave itself a chance for the league’s No. 2 playoff seed with a straight-set victory over Ilwaco on Thursday in Ilwaco.

The Wildcats (8-8, 7-4 2B Pacific) won 25-18, 25-9 and 25-16.

Ocosta was led by Brynn Rasmus (9 assists), Jolissa Schlegel (4 kills, 3 digs, 100% service, 8 aces), Alexandria Matthews (5 kills) and Alexia Bradley (5 kills).

The Wildcats totalled 24 aces as a team in the win.

“We served tough and accurate as a team tonight,” Ocosta head coach Erin Snider said. “We are coming together just in time for playoffs.”

Ocosta sits a game behind Forks for second place in the league and will host the Spartans at 7 p.m. on Monday, after The Daily World goes to press.

Naselle 3, Willapa Valley 0

Willapa Valley lost in straight sets to Naselle 25-15, 25-20 and 25-19 on Thursday in Menlo.

The Vikings (9-5, 6-4 1B Columbia Valley) will host Three Rivers Christian at 6 p.m. on Tuesday before closing out the regular season on the road against Mossyrock at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Wishkah Valley 3, Oakville 0

Wishkah Valley won in straight sets to Oakville on Senior Night Thursday at Wishkah Valley High School.

Wishkah (2-5 overall, 1B Coastal) won 25-20, 25-16 and 25-18.

“The girls came out ready to play on senior night,” Wishkah head coach Katerina Eaton said. “Our communication was strong tonight.

Wishkah Valley honored seniors Delaney Baltzell, Lilly Bernhardy, Rose Bernhardy and Katelyn Laskowski during the Senior Night festivities.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER

Aberdeen 2, Centralia 0

Aberdeen picked up a key league victory on Senior Night with a 2-0 win over Centralia on Thursday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (8-2, 6-2 2A Evergreen) got on the board in the 22nd minute when senior midfielder Marina Marll sent a through ball to senior striker Maddi Gore, who beat the Tigers keeper 1-on-1 for a 1-0 lead.

Gore struck again in the 32nd minute, beating the keeper 1-on-1 after receiving a feed from senior midfielder Aman Cheema for a 2-0 lead.

Aberdeen outshot Centralia 27-3, with Cats keeper Jaylynn Phimmasone earning the clean sheet filling in for injured starter Dom Trevino.

“Our defense was pretty good and our possession was better, but it was frustrating to dominate so thoroughly and not score a few more times,” Bobcats head coach Larry Fleming said. “Regardless, we got the important league win to keep us in the driver’s seat for second place.”

Aberdeen honored seniors Aili Scott, Gore, Cheema, Marll, Michelle Lang, Andrea Meraz, Solveig Kvarsvik, Trevino, Alice Earley and Brisa Guzman on Senior Night.

The Bobcats sit a game ahead of WF West and 1.5 games ahead of Black Hills for second place in the 2A Evergreen Conference.

Aberdeen hosts first-place Tumwater at noon on Saturday.

PREP CROSS COUNTRY

Hoquiam’s Higgins, Roloff win league titles

Hoquiam senior Timmy Higgins and junior Jane Roloff won their respective races at the 1A Evergreen League Championship on Thursday at Oaksridge Golf Course in Elma.

Higgins won the boys 5,000-meter varsity race with a time of 14:40, beating Montesano senior Aric Jacklin by 14 seconds.

Montesano’s Benjamin Anderson (18:29, 4th), Jesse Anderson (18:50, 7th) and Colton Sweet (18:53, 9th) also finished in the top 10 to help the Bulldogs win the league title with 34 points.

Eatonville (40 points), Tenino (58) and Elma (96) placed 2-4.

Roloff breezed to a victory in the girls race, crossing the finish line first with a time of 20:14, nearly three minutes better than Tenino’s Haley Huber (23:09, 2nd).

Elma sophomore Georgia Burkhart (23:30) placed fourth while teammates Kyle Have (24:12, 6th) and Kenzie Haver (25:02, 9th) also placed in the top 10 to lead Elma to a league title with 23 points.

Paced by Lilly Schweppe (24:16, 7th) and Asha Harris (24:46, 8th), Montesano placed second with 32 points.

North Beach’s Baggaley wins Pac League title

North Beach senior Asher Baggaley crossed the finish line first to place first at the 2B Pacific League Championship meet on Thursday in Ocosta.

Baggaley ran the 5k race in 18:34 to beat second-place finisher Nova Raupp (19:34.5) of Forks by more than a minute, claiming a league championship in the process.

The Hyaks’ Noah Aquino (19:41.59, 3rd), Ocosta’s Ivan Weber (20:40.4, 9th) and South Bend’s Justin Yi (20:46.5, 10th) all placed in the top 10.

Ilwaco won the league title with 40 points, beating Forks (40 points) on a tiebreaker.

North Beach placed third with 55 points.

In the girls race, Ocosta’s Madeline Schaeffer (23:57.4) and Rebekah Stone (24:03.2) placed second and third, respectively, behind league champion Moli Luong of Forks (23:47.8).

Willapa Valley’s Jasmine Solso (24:10.8, 4th), Raymond’s Genevieve Sarich (24:43, 7th), Willapa Valley’s Kaitlyn Ganzel (25:28.5, 8th) and Ocosta’s Josie Collier (26:41.11, 9th) also placed in the top 10.

Next up is the 2B District 4 Championships on Oct. 27 at the Lewis River Golf Course in Woodland.
