Wednesday Prep Roundup: Montesano blanks Adna on the pitch

Less than 24 hours before picking up its first win of the season, the Montesano Bulldogs were back at on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs scored three goals in the second half to pull away from the Adna Pirates in a 4-1 victory at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.

Coming off Tuesday’s 2-1 win over WF West in Chehalis, the Bulldogs struck first in their home opener. Bulldogs junior forward Ana Estrada scored off an assist from sophomore forward Mikayla Stanfield to put Monte up 1-0 in the 13th minute.

That was all the scoring Montesano could muster in the first half as the Bulldogs took the one-goal lead into halftime despite dominating in shots on goal.

“I think in the first half we could have done better,” said Montesano head coach Fidel Sanchez, who wasn’t making any excuses for his team not living up to their own standard of play in the opening 40 minutes. “I think that lack of focus in the first half is on the coaching staff. It’s not on the girls. It’s up to us to get them ready to play.

“I told the girls I don’t care if we did or did not play (the previous day). We have to play 100% every time we step on the field. We train for that and it shouldn’t be a matter of if we are going to play. We are going to play our style of play.”

In the second half, Monte began to show signs of its form exhibited in Tuesday’s victory.

Stanfield gave Monte (2-1 overall) a 2-0 lead with a goal in the 45th minute and the Bulldogs went up 3-0 when senior forward Jaiden Morrison took a pass from senior midfielder Paige Lisherness and ripped a shot just under the cross bar 10 minutes later.

In the 62nd minute, Stanfield sent a through pass up the middle that was chased down by sophomore forward Reghann Fairbairn, who was able to get a foot on the ball while colliding with Adna defenders for Monte’s fourth goal of the game.

Monte’s only blemish on the resumé in the second half was when Adna’s Summer White scored to break the shutout in the 70th minute.

The Bulldogs outshot Adna 29-3, with 19 of Monte’s shots being on goal.

Sanchez was pleased with the victory, but didn’t see his team reach the same level of consistent play it had against WF West.

“I didn’t think we moved the ball well in the first half. We got better in the second half, but not as much as I’d like to see,” he said. “We move the ball in practice pretty well, and we want to see that here. … When we don’t move the ball, things sort of sputter a little bit. So we have to be able to move the ball like I know we can. … And (the players) know that.”

Tumwater 5, Aberdeen 0

Aberdeen struggled in a quick turnaround game against the reigning league champions, losing 5-0 to Tumwater on Wednesday in Tumwater.

The Bobcats (1-1 overall, 0-1 2A Evergreen) looked tired playing one day after winning an intense 1-0 match over Myrtle Street Rival Hoquiam. Aberdeen fell behind by four goals in the first half and didn’t manage a shot against the 2A Evergreen League champion Thunderbirds (1-0, 1-0).

Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming noted the play of Aili Scott, Jaylynn Phimmasone and Marina Marll for showing “their no quit attitude” and aggressively winning the ball throughout the match.

Ocosta 3, Muckleshoot Tribal 0

Ocosta opened its season on a long road trip to Auburn, earning a 3-0 victory over Muckleshoot Tribal School on Wednesday.

Ocosta (1-0 overall) looked dominant but struggled to get shots on target early in the game, forcing Wildcats head coach Mike King to move last season’s leading scorer Miki Ness — who started at goal keeper — to the front to provide Ocosta the offensive the spark it needed.

“We tried seven different forwards, but no one could find the back of the net,” King said.

The move paid dividends almost immediately as Ness scored just three minutes later, giving Ocosta a 1-0 lead at the 30-minute mark of the first half.

Ness scored again in the second half, this time in the 60th minute and Ocosta put the game away when Kylee Denny scored in the 75th minute.

Ocosta outshot the Kings 32-2, with eighth-grader Mia Saunders saving the only shot she faced after replacing Ness.

All three Wildcats goal came off of intercepted passes.

King credited defenders Trinity White, Taeler Jardine, Kennedy Reynolds, Gabby Ness and Meghan Denny for outstanding performances as well as Kylee Denny, Natalie Carloza and Elizabeth Gamez for effective midfield passing.

Elma 4, Rochester 1

Down 1-0 at halftime, Elma scored four unanswered goals in the second half for a 4-1 victory over Rochester on Tuesday at Rochester High School.

The Eagles (1-1 overall) fell behind in the first half after the Warriors converted a penalty kick, but responded with a second-half blitz that included two goals from Grace Spencer.

Spencer tied the game when she scored off a deflected ball at point-blank range approximately 10 minutes into the second half. She gave Elma a 2-1 lead when she took a feed from Janessa Sample and scored on a shot to the far post seven minutes later.

Beta Valentine gave Elma an insurance goal when she took a through ball from Chloe Clark and scored on a hard, low shot five minutes later.

Sample then put the game away when she scored on a 45-degree shot against the grain off a cross from Clark.

All of Elma’s scoring happened in the span of approximately 25 minutes.

Elma head coach Evan Valentine liked the resiliency he saw out of his young team and commended his defense.

“Our keeper had a relatively quiet night. Our defense did a good job closing down their forwards,” he said. “I told them at halftime that sometimes you are playing against the game. The hardest opponent is the game itself. … You have to figure out a way to get through the game. Once we scored the first goal we got confidence and we just kind of put it all together and made it happen.”
