Undermanned Ocosta stays close to Toledo in 2-1 loss

Girls Soccer Roundup: Ocosta, Hoquiam, Elma fall on the road

Indians 2, Wildcats 1

TOLEDO — A young Ocosta squad played up with Toledo for most of this Central 2B League opener on Tuesday, but couldn’t convert chances in the loss.

Playing with six eighth graders, the Wildcats got one goal back in the 63rd minute when Kjirstin Hopfer dribbled around a defender and the goalkeeper to the net for the goal. Ryann Raffelson picked up the assist on the play.

Toledo scored in the 22nd and 34th minutes, with the second goal credited as an Ocosta own goal.

“We had our opportunities in the first half and we did well playing a physical game with them,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said. “Considering how young we are, it was good to see how competitive we were against one of the best teams in the league.”

Kristi Raffelson had seven saves in goal for Ocosta (0-1, 2-1).

On Thursday, Ocosta hosts Life Christian Academy.

Tigers 3, Grizzlies 1

CENTRALIA — Hoquiam had a tough time with Centralia’s ball control offense in this non-league loss on Tuesday.

The host Tigers took a 2-0 lead after 18 minutes and had most of the run of play in the first half. Emma Skinner got Hoquiam on the board in the 47th minute when she took a long ball from Maya Jump and beat the goalkeeper with a one-touch move for the goal.

“They controlled the ball 80 percent of the time,” HHS head coach Drew Grannemann said. “They came out hot and it took us a while to meet their momentum. Once we got the goal back, we were unable to capitalize on more chances. We just couldn’t find the net.”

Skinner was cited for her work on the wings and defender Jenna Doll was cited for her aggressive play on defense.

On Thursday, Hoquiam (1-2) hosts Seton Catholic at Olympic Stadium.

Wildcats 3, Eagles 1

LA CENTER — An early goal was matched with a goal at the stroke of halftime for host La Center to provide enough distance away from Elma in this non-league match on Tuesday.

The Wildcats scored in the sixth and 40th minutes for a 2-0 halftime lead. Peyton Elliott got Elma on the board in the 58th minute off an assist by Molly Johnston, but La Center finished with a goal in the 77th minute.

“We started out of the gate quickly, but La Center is very fast and they closed down on us in the midfield to win the ball,” Elma head coach Scott Rockey said. “It was tough to maintain possession. The girls played better in the second half. We had opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on.”

On Thursday, Elma (2-1) hosts Castle Rock.
