Twin Harbor runners compete at state cross country meets

PASCO — Two Ocosta runners put together the two best individual finishes of the day to highlight the state cross country championship meet at Sun Willows Golf Course on Saturday.

Senior Kathryn Anderson finished her cross country career with a 17th overall finish in the girls 2B/1A championship race. Anderson’s teammate, McKenzie Ballo, also finished her career on Saturday and finished 24th overall.

For many Twin Harbors cross country runners, Saturday was the final destination of a long season, regardless of their finishing times and places.

Class 2A

Aberdeen’s two runners had similar experiences at state on Saturday.

Senior Kyle Hurd was unable to keep up with the main pack of leaders en route to a 33rd place finish to cap his AHS career. It is his second-best career finish at state. Last year, Hurd took 24th overall.

For junior Faith Cardenas, she was in the middle of the pack and navigated the course with skill to finish 64th overall.

Class 1A

Montesano’s boys team was unable to get through the crowd in the 1A boys championship race, finishing 16th overall as a team.

Led by Logan Clements at 62nd overall, scoring at 45th, the Bulldogs finished with 381 points. Deer Park won the boys team title with 83 points, edging out Medical Lake.

“We didn’t run well,” Montesano head coach James Edwards said. “When you look at the results, we didn’t run well. They boys know that, too.”

For Montesano, this is how they finished up: Jake Mustard, 89th; Connor Parkinson, 105th; Josef Aschenbrenner, 136th; Andy Fry, 141st; Braden Stowers, 145th; and, Kyle Cox, 155th.

Elma’s Dylan Volz finished 114th overall as the Eagles’ lone runner.

Class 2B

Willapa Valley’s Traci Hoffman capped her high school career on Saturday with a 45th-place finish in the girls race.

Ocosta’s girls, who were the defending state 2B/1A team champions, didn’t field a full team on Saturday. Liberty Bell claimed the girls team title with 24 points, landing all of its scoring runners in the top-14 spots overall.

In the boys race, Raymond’s Jachin Heckman was the top Harbor runner, finishing in 85th place. Heckman’s Willapa Harbor teammate, Willapa Valley’s Ryon Ashley, took 91st overall.

North Beach’s Miguel Eastman came in at 90th place, with Ocosta’s Alex Bailey at 96th, Ocosta’s Sam Quinby at 108th and Willapa Valley’s Patrick Pearson at 132nd.
