Hoquiam girls lose to Capital. Ocosta rallies to beat Pe Ell

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Cougars 58, Grizzlies 47

Breaking open a tight game in the third quarter, Capital downed Hoquiam in a non-league season opener Tuesday night at Hoquiam Square Garden.

After hitting a couple of late baskets to take a 27-21 halftime lead, the Class 3A Cougars began the second half with a run that produced a 16-point lead in the third quarter. The Grizzlies were never closer than eight the rest of the way.

“We came out really flat in the third quarter,” Hoquiam coach Mark Maxfield said. “They shot well and they had a lot more energy than we did. Other than that, it was a pretty evenly played game. The bottom line was that the third quarter got us so far behind that we couldn’t catch up.”

Karlie Krohn topped the Grizzlies with 13 points, while Maya Jump added 11.

Rylee Vonhof contributed nine points and eight rebounds for the Grizzlies. Kylee Bagwell pulled down six rebounds.

The Grizzlies make the long trek to Kingston on Thursday.

PE ELL — Zach Allton scored 11 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter as Ocosta rallied to beat Pe Ell in a season-opening non-leaguer Tuesday night at Pe Ell.

Giving away considerable size, the Wildcats trailed 41-38 entering the final period.

“At about the six-minute mark, we went to a full-court press and it was very, very effective,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby said. “I think we had better legs at the end of the night than they did. When you can get Zach in the full court, not many guys are going to stop him. I was proud of the boys finishing with poise down the stretch.”

Allton also had six steals and four assists without committing a turnover. Cole Hatton added 10 points for the Wildcats.

Ocosta opens Pacific League play at North Beach tonight.

FORKS — Class 1A Forks spoiled North Beach’s season opener in a non-league game Tuesday at Forks.

“We had trouble controlling their inside play,” Hyak coach Larry Moore said. “Too many layins and offensive rebounds.”

Rodney Washington paced the Hyaks with 17 points and six rebounds. Nolan Charley also pulled down six rebounds. Moore cited Austin Brown for his reserve effort.

Complete box-score information was unavailable.

The Hyaks hosted Ocosta on Wednesday.
