Tuesday Prep Roundup: Grizzly golfers slosh to victory

Hoquiam girls overcome wet weather for golf victory

GIRLS GOLF

Grizzlies 194, Wildcats 213

Hoquiam used its depth to conquer wet conditions and top La Center in a Southwest Washington 1A League contest Tuesday at Highland Golf Course.

La Center’s Taylor Entenmann, sixth at state last year, took medalist honors with a 39 and Maddie Beutler added a 46 for the Wildcats.

But the Grizzlies had three players in the 40s and no player scored higher than 55. Brooke Bogdanovich led Hoquiam with an excellent 45.

“They had to putt through standing water on a couple of greens,” Hoquiam coach Patty Sundstrom noted.

The Grizzlies will be idle until April 12, when they face Montesano.

La Center (213) — Taylor Entenmann 39, Maddie Beutler 46, Sierra Harris 74, Ally England 54, Hannah Graham 77, Sarah Mayolo 81.

Hoquiam (194) — Bailey Smith 54, Josie Emery 48, Brooke Bogdanovich 45, McKenna Boone 52, Sandra Parks 49, Megan Folkers 55.

BOYS SOCCER

Bulldogs 1, Cougars 1

VANCOUVER — Cole Streeter’s goal with five minutes remaining enabled Montesano to salvage a tie with Seton Catholic in a non-league contest Tuesday at Vancouver.

Streeter deflected a Braden Stowers pass into the net from about 10 yards out to earn the deadlock. Seton Catholic had converted a penalty kick late in the first half.

The Bulldogs (0-5-2) had a slight advantage in scoring opportunities, although Rick Denholm said his team began slowly.

“I think the 2 1/2-hour bus ride took something out of them,” Denholm said. “We talked to them at halftime and told them it was a longer trip to Forks, so they better figure something out. They came out with a little more intensity in the second half.”

Stowers, who shifted between several positions, was credited with a fine performance.

The Bulldogs host Elma in an Evergreen 1A League opener today.

Spartans 3, Eagles 1

ELMA – Experiencing difficulty generating scoring chances, Elma fell to Forks in an Evergreen 1A League opener Tuesday at Davis Field.

The Spartans scored in the 20th minute when they played the ball over the top to get the ball into the box. Elma keeper A.J. Hernandez challenged on one-on-one but an unmarked player tapped the ball inside the far post.

Up 1-0 at the half, Forks struck again when another forward got free in the box and beat Hernandez in the 47th minute.

A few minutes later, Martin Baltazar answered back with a good individual effort, beating two defenders and beating the Spartan keeper on a one-on-one opportunity to keep the Eagles within striking distance.

The comeback hopes ended in the 70th minute when Forks converted a penalty kick.

Without a few starters, Elma head coach Carson Seaberg wasn’t discouraged with the loss.

“They played at and above their skill level so they did well for us but weren’t able to possess the ball and get the midfield involved as much as we wanted to,” he said. “But we are moving in the right direction.”

Elma (0-1, 2-4) will visit Montesano today.
