LUMMI ISLAND — Powered by Zach Cain’s 37 points, Taholah erupted in the fourth quarter to knock off previously unbeaten Tulalip Heritage in the Lummi Tournament on Thursday.

Cain, an all-stater last season, also pulled down 20 rebounds. The Chitwhins (5-2) also received big boosts off the bench from Tommy Underwood (4 of 4 from the field) and Eli Waugh.

Taholah trailed 56-55 before shutting down Tulalip’s long-distance shooting in the fourth quarter.

“We went back into a full-court 2-3 zone and it was pretty effective,” Taholah coach Mike Rose said.

The Chitwhins face host Lummi today.

RAYMOND — Jumping out to a 22-0 lead after one quarter, Montesano walloped Darrington on the opening day of the Raymond Holiday Tournament on Thursday.

The tone was set early as the Bulldogs (7-2) led 45-7 at the half.

“We came out and caused a few turnovers and got some easy buckets. The kids played some strong defense,” Monte coach Doug Galloway said.

Tanner Nicklas and Seth Dierkop shared Bulldog scoring honors with 13 points apiece, with Nicklas garnering eight rebounds.

Trevor Ridgway had eight rebounds and five steals. Sam Winter dished out five assists.

Montesano takes on Raymond in tourney play tonight.

RAYMOND — Kicking into gear after a slow start, Raymond downed Onalaska on the opening day of the Raymond Holiday Tournament on Thursday.

Marcus Anderson scored 15 points, while Kolin Koski had six rebounds and Kaci Phansisay three steals for the Gulls (5-5).

Onalaska led 16-11 after the first quarter, but the Gulls eventually adapted to the Loggers’ traditional slow-paced, screen-oriented offense.

“Once we figured out how to defend it, we tightened up on defense,” Raymond coach Mike Tully said. “In the second quarter, we were able to shake free and get some open looks at the basket.”

LONGVIEW — Turning things around in the third quarter, R.A. Long downed Aberdeen in a non-league contest Thursday at Longview.

The Bobcats led 29-25 at the half but fell victim to familiar third-quarter blues. Outscoring the Cats 22-5 in that period, the Lumberjacks led by at least eight throughout the final quarter.

Aberdeen was guilty of 24 turnovers — 13 in the second half.

“We understand that’s the most crucial time of the game and we can’t put together a solid third quarter yet,” Bobcat coach Mark Buckman lamented.

Javier Bojorge and Ben Dublanko scored 13 points apiece for Aberdeen, with Dublanko also dishing out seven assists.

Jeshua Manwell, who had seven rebounds, and Gio Pisani were cited by Buckman for strong performances.

The Bobcats (1-7) next host Elma. Listed for Friday night on some schedules, the game is now slated for Saturday.

YAKIMA — George Reidy scored 22 points as Cedar Park Christian held off Hoquiam on the opening day of the Yakima SunDome Classic.

Down by 10 entering the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies (2-7) closed the deficit to two, but missed a 3-point shot in the waning seconds. After Cedar Park made one of two free throws with 3.5 seconds left, Hoquiam’s Victor James had a half-court attempt rattle off the rim at the buzzer.

James scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter. Bryson Eccles and Rayyon Dayton added 13 points apiece, with Eccles also grabbing 13 rebounds.

The Grizzlies were without starting post Matt Brown, who missed the trip to Yakima due to illness.

Even without Brown, Hoquiam owned a 37-20 rebounding advantage and committed only nine turnovers.

“Statistically, we outplayed them. We just didn’t shoot the ball very well,” HHS coach Curtis Eccles said.

The Grizzlies, in fact, were only 4-of-13 from the foul line.

Hoquiam closes out the tourney Friday against highly regarded 2B power Brewster.

OYEHUT — Charles Wright Academy toppled North Beach on the first day of the Holiday With the Hyaks tournament Thursday at North Beach’s “House of Pain.”

Only 1-of-15 from 3-point range, the Hyaks shot 30 percent from the field overall.

“We played really good defense, but you’re not going to beat anybody scoring 26 points,” Hyak coach Larry Moore summarized.

Marcus Pope and Ben Poplin scored 10 points apiece for North Beach, with Pope also collecting eight rebounds. Moore cited Patrick Day-Heyd for reserve play.

The Hyaks (1-8) conclude tourney play by facing Sandy, B.C., on Friday.

RAYMOND — Karlie Krohn scored 18 points as Hoquiam opened play in the Raymond Holiday Tournament by routing Darrington on Thursday.

The Grizzlies (4-5) conclude tourney play Friday by facing host Raymond.

Krohn made 9-of-13 field-goal attempts and also dished out six assists. As a team, the Grizzlies shot 49 percent from the field, with 20 assists and 20 steals, while limiting Darrington to five baskets.

“We were seeing the court and laying them in,” Hoquiam coach Mark Maxfield said. “Coming out and scoring 23 in the first quarter set the stage for the entire game.”

Maddie German had 11 points, eight steals and four assists for Hoquiam.

RAYMOND — Makenna Williams barely missed a triple-double as host Raymond downed Onalaska in the opening round of the Raymond Holiday Tournament on Thursday.

Williams had 12 points, 12 rebounds and eight steals. Teammate Isabel Mora narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Gulls (3-7) outrebounded Onalaska 43-34 and came up with 17 steals.

“We got a lot of second-shot opportunities and we won a lot of 50-50 balls,” Raymond coach Jason Koski reported.

The Gulls close out the tournament against Hoquiam tonight.

LYNDEN — Bellevue Christian cashed in on Montesano turnovers to down the Bulldogs on the final day of the Lynden Cloud Nine tournament on Thursday.

Plagued by 24 turnovers in the contest, the Bulldogs (7-4) trailed by 10 points early. They trimmed the deficit to three before Bellevue Christian re-established control.

“We must decrease our turnovers and improve our shooting and rebounding before league play starts next week,” Monte coach Julie Graves reported.

Zoe Hutchings scored 19 points while Samantha Stanfield added 11 for Montesano.

The Bulldogs travel to Tenino for their league opener Thursday.

LUMMI ISLAND – Taholah’s girls shook off a slow start and found themselves down by one at halftime but turned it on defensively in the second half to secure the victory.

The Chitwhins fell behind early by a slim margin but with the Hawks only having six players at their disposal, Taholah clamped down on defense and came away with the win.

Denise (Dolan) Curleybear led the way with 12 points.

Taholah head coach Karl Braden said he is proud of the effort his team has showed in every game its played in the tournament.

“I’m very pleased with the way we’ve played in the whole tournament. Its not just that we’re winning, its that we’re heading in the right direction and playing closer to what we’re capable of,” he said.

Braden also highlighted eighth-grader Nakeah McCrory who came away with seven rebounds in the first half alone.

Taholah will take on the tournament host Lummi on Friday.

MOUNT VERNON — Four players scored in double figures as Grays Harbor College thumped Edmonds on the opening day of the Skagit Valley Holiday Tournament on Thursday.

Alexia Thrower, the NWAC’s leading scorer, topped the Chokers with 23 points. Angela Sikora added 14 points, Estelle Wilson 13 and Katie Brisbois 12 for GHC (9-1). Brisbois attained a double-double with 10 rebounds.

Grays Harbor began sluggishly, according to coach Chad Allan.

“Ten days off did not help the cause, but we did enough to come away with the win,” Allan said.

The Chokers face host Skagit Valley on Friday night.
