Thursday Prep Roundup

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Eagles 50, Indians 30

TOLEDO — Jalyn Sackrider scored 22 points as Elma’s girls took care of business on the road against Toledo.

Sackrider powered the offense by taking advantage of her size and getting to the rim but Quin Mikel had a solid game as well adding nine points of her own for the Eagles (2-0).

Elma head coach Lisa Johnson said was particularly impressed by how things got rolling in the second quarter, when they scored 18 of their points.

“We started off a little slow after playing games back to back,” she said. “But, in the second quarter Sackrider just dominated. She had 12 points in that quarter.”

Brooke Sutherby also found ways to contribute and came away with eight rebounds and four assists.

Vikings 43, Gulls 27

MENLO Willapa Valley shook off a slow start and won comfortably against Raymond on Thursday at Tenoski Gym.

Both teams struggled to hit shots early in the game as the Vikings trailed the Seagulls, 6-5 heading into the second quarter of what appeared at the time to be a low-scoring affair.

However, the Vikings scored in the double digits the remaining three quarters while the Seagull offense struggled to take flight.

Vikings head coach Colby Rogers said he didn’t make any strategic changes to get his offense into gear.

“We didn’t really make any adjustments,” he said. “We just really struggled in the first quarter, collected ourselves and played relatively better throughout the course of the game.”

Cameron Swartz led the way with 13 points and Rogers noted he was particularly impressed by the offensive contributions of Hannah Cook as well.

Makenna Williams paced Raymond with nine points.

Raymond (0-2) will try to get back on track when it plays Elma on Monday while Willapa Valley (2-0) will try to build on its momentum against North Beach on Tuesday.

KINGSTON — Host Kingston rattled off the final 11 points of the first half and went on to trounce cold-shooting Hoquiam in a non-league game Thursday at Kingston.

The Grizzlies trailed by only four, 19-15, with two minutes remaining in the first half before the Buccaneers went on their decisive run.

“For almost a half, we battled them,” Grizzly coach Mark Maxfield said. “Their pressure defense caused us grief and we never warmed up.”

Hoquiam hit only 8 of 64 field-goal attempts.

Kingston’s Karleigh Gomez led all scorers with 22 points. Maya Jump had nine points and Rylee Vonhof eight rebounds for the Grizzlies (0-2).

WESTPORT — Kjirstin Hopfer scored 22 points and Kristi Raffelson added 20 as Ocosta trounced North Beach in a Pacific League opener Thursday.

North Beach also had trouble taking care of the ball and committed 25 turnovers that the Wildcats often converted into points.

Ocosta head coach Jason Barnum said a relatively mistake-free game kept North Beach from closing the gap.

“We only had 10 turnovers so that really helped us out since that had been an issue for us in the past,” he said.

Ocosta will play Northwest Christian at home Tuesday while the Hyaks will try to right the ship against Chief Leschi on Saturday.

LACEY — Despite winning five events, Aberdeen fell to River Ridge in a boys swimming opener Thursday at Lacey.

Aberdeen’s Conner Gates won two individual events — the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 freestyle — and earned district qualifying times in both events. Teammates Trevor Mullins and Jared Durr won the 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke, respectively.

Gates and Mullins teamed with Brice Kola and Sage Bridges to capture the 200 free relay. Mullins and Bridges also qualified for district.

“I am very happy with the team’s overall performance, even in a dual-meet loss,” Aberdeen coach Rob Burns said. “This was the first meet of the season and, for some, their first competitive swim meet ever. It was a good first meet, one we can build upon this season.”

He cited Gates, Kola, Brennan Munoz and Toby Courts for fine performances.

GIRLS BOWLING

Wolves 5, Bobcats 0

TUMWATER — Aberdeen couldn’t keep up with a dominant Black Hills team and fell 5-0.

The Bobcats dropped the first game 759-617 and the second, 842-615. Black Hills also won the Baker games, 169-165, 161-109.

Meghan Howell continues to show promise and led the team with 289 pins through the first two games. Syndi Tingwall also bowled well and ended up with 271 pins.

Bobcats head coach David Bruncke gave credit to Black Hills and said he hopes to see scores rise again against Tumwater on Friday.

“We were beaten by a very good team today on their home lanes. The 842 second game of Black Hills today was the most we have seen in our two years bowling. Our scores were back into our average area. Hopefully we will pick it up back at Tumwater Lanes.”
