Aberdeen 45, Shelton 31

Aberdeen picked up a much-needed league victory with a 45-31 win over Shelton on Friday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (8-5 overall, 2-4 2A Evergreen) held a slim two-point lead after one quarter that extended to 23-17 by halftime thanks to three 3-pointers in the first half by Bobcats freshman guard Bentley Brown.

The turning point of the game came midway through the fourth quarter, when Shelton was hit with a technical foul on a play where Aberdeen senior guard Annie Troeh was fouled.

Troeh made the first two personal-foul free throws then converted both tech-foul freebies to put Aberdeen up by 13 points.

Troeh led Aberdeen with 18 point to go along with six rebounds.

Brown added 12 points on four 3-pointers, Sophia Knutson had eight points and Jaylynn Phimmasone finished with three points, six rebounds and six steals.

Aberdeen had 16 turnovers as a team.

“That’s pretty good for the way we run,” said Aberdeen head coach Curtis Eccles, whose team was victorious on back-to-back nights. “They’ve really stepped it up and are playing well as of late.”

Aberdeen has a league game against Black Hills at 7 p.m. Thursday at Aberdeen High School.

Hoquiam rallied for four points down late in the game to earn a 30-27 win over Tenino on Friday at Tenino High School.

The Grizzlies (3-7, 1-1 1A Evergreen) trailed 27-23 with a minute left in the game before senior post Dylan Little scored on the interior followed by a Nadine Stewart steal and coast-to-coast layup to tie the game with 45 seconds remaining.

After Hoquiam’s defense got a stop, Avery Howard hit a free throw to put the Grizzlies up 28-27 with 30 seconds on the clock.

Hoquiam’s defense produced another stop followed by a contested layup conversion by Lexi LaBounty off an assist from Stewart with 10 seconds left to seal the Grizzlies victory.

“We started by giving Tenino the first four points of the game in the first minute and spent 30 more minutes trying to erase that cushion they would keep,” Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan said. “Today was a struggle and they were challenged to step up when we needed them most to play as a team, and they did. So proud of them withstanding the storm and happy we came out on top.”

Hoquiam went 9 of 43 from the field (20%), had 22 turnovers and outrebounded the Beavers (2-12, 0-2) 25-13.

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL

Raymond 66, South Bend 37

In one of the last vestiges of a storied Pacific County rivalry, Raymond had little trouble disposing of a young South Bend team 66-37 on Friday at Raymond High School.

After a first quarter that saw the Seagulls (6-5, 4-2 2B Pacific) hit just 3-of-15 shots (20%), Raymond exploded for 30 points in the second quarter as five different players hits two or more field goals in the frame to outscore South Bend (0-9, 0-6) by 25 points.

“It took us a little while to get going tonight. We couldn’t buy a bucket in the first quarter,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “Luckily, we were able to crank things up defensively in the second quarter to get some easy lay-ins and pull away.”

The Seagulls earned a running clock midway through the third quarter and by the end of the period held a 56-19 lead over South Bend, which has just one player on its roster – senior Josh Flynn – that is not a sophomore or freshman.

Raymond shot 24 for 54 from the field (44%), including 4 of 8 from 3-point range (50%), to go along with 16 steals and 14 assists.

Four players scored in double figures for Raymond, with senior Austin Snodgrass leading the way with 13 points, six rebounds and four steals.

Isaac Schlueter (12 points), Chris Quintana (11 pts.) and Austin Kongbouakhay (11 pts.) also scored in double digits.

Raymond had 45 rebounds as a team, led by junior Dalton Welch with 10.

Freshman Alex Bucio led South Bend with 12 points. He was the only South Bend player to finish in double figures.

Despite the dominant win, Tully showed concern of specific aspects of his team’s performance on Friday.

“Our emphasis going into the game was to execute to the best of our ability, and we struggled to do that all night,” he said. “We committed 24 turnovers, and we can’t continue to do that as we move forward through the remainder of the season.”

South Bend hosts Ilwaco at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Raymond plays at Ocosta at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Hyaks (3-9, 2-5 2B Pacific) trailed 23-3 after one quarter and by 18 at halftime against the Fishermen (9-3, 5-0), who are No. 10 in the WIAA RPI rankings.

“We had a tough night,” North Beach head coach Larry Moore said. “We weren’t able to slow Ilwaco down. Our transition defense wasn’t what it needed to be. The boys played hard but we just couldn’t get it done.”

Jade Charley led the Hyaks with nine points and three blocks while Kobe Charley had four points, four rebounds and three assists.

Parker Johnson “came off the bench and gave us some energy on defense,” according to Moore, and scored four points for North Beach.

The Hyaks went 11 of 47 from the field (23%), including 1 of 14 from the 3-point line (7%).
