BOYS PREP BASKETBALL

Naselle 65, Willapa Valley 62

Willapa Valley suffered a gut-wrenching 65-62 overtime loss to Naselle in a 1A Columbia Valley League game on Saturday at Willapa Valley High School.

Valley (6-7 overall, 5-1 1B Columbia Valley) was in control through three quarters, leading 46-35 heading into the final period.

But poor execution over the final eight minutes of regulation allowed the Comets (8-2, 5-1) to tie the score at 52-all and send the game into overtime.

Naselle carried the momentum into overtime, outscoring Valley 13-10 to hand the Vikings their first league loss of the season.

“This one hurts badly,” Valley head coach Derek Rask said. “I was proud of how hard we played and how hard we competed. … We are a young team, so we need to learn and grow from this moving forward.”

Nathan Fluke led Valley with 25 points and nine rebounds.

JB Russell scored 12 points off the bench for the Vikings, which shot 39% on 24-of-61 shooting and hit 10-of-15 free throws (66%).

Willapa Valley plays at Mossyrock at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Napavine 85, Elma 44

Elma couldn’t keep up with one of the top teams in the 2B class in an 85-44 loss to Napavine on Saturday at Napavine High School.

Elma (7-5) scored 33 points in the first half on 44% shooting, but still trailed by 14 after the Tigers (11-0) scored 30 points in the second quarter.

The game got away from the Eagles in the third quarter as Napavine outscored Elma 24-6 in the period.

The Eagles managed just 11 points in the second half en route to the loss.

“Extremely pleased with our first-half effort and our approach on the boards. Best rebounding effort of the year. Excited to see our guards handle the pressure versus their full-court trap,” Elma head coach Matt Ferrier said. “Unfortunately, the second half was a different story. We made a plan to come out very deliberate in the second half. … We tried to match their skill level and we were served a world-class education. They are too good for us to try to run and gun with them. We needed to grind out long possessions but we didn’t get it done.”

Junior guard Traden Carter (12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists) and senior forward AJ Holmes (10 pts., 11 reb.) led the Eagles, which shot 29% on 16-of-56 shooting in the game.

The Eagles face Montesano in a 1A Evergreen League game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Ilwaco 75, Hoquiam 30

Turnovers continue to plague Hoquiam as the Grizzlies fell to Ilwaco 75-30 on Saturday at Ilwaco High School.

Hoquiam (3-8) committed 33 turnovers in the non-league contest and was out of contention early, trailing by 13 after one quarter and 49-22 at halftime.

“We continue to be our own worst enemy. Ilwaco has a very solid and well-coached team that plays the right way,” Grizzlies head coach Chad Allan said. “We have no excuses other than we are obviously not playing at the level necessary for a varsity program at this time. Thirty-three turnovers is unacceptable, period.”

The Grizzlies shot 12 of 35 from the floor (34%) while the Fishermen (7-4) nearly doubled Hoquiam’s total shot attempts, going 30 for 60 (50%) from the field.

RSB struggled with ball-control on Saturday, committing 23 turnovers to just seven for Rainier while the top-ranked Mountaineers (13-0) had 17 steals as a team in the game.

“Unfortunately we did not even come close to meeting the challenge of competing against a high-caliber and talented team tonight,” Ravens head coach Jason Koski said. “The game of basketball is not one that is given to you, you have to earn it.”

No Ravens players scored more than seven points in the game.

RSB was led by sophomore guard Kassie Koski, who scored six points to go along with a team high 11 rebounds.
