New Choker head basketball coach lands two new players

Grays Harbor’s new men’s basketball coach James “JJ” Thatcher wasted no time in signing two new players to NWAC scholarships.

“Taking over a new job very late and with many of the returners transferring out to other schools, we needed some new talent to fill in for the upcoming season,” Thatcher said.

Thatcher hit the ground running for his start as leader of the team. On his way from Florida while moving to the Harbor he made stops in Chicago and New York to recruit players that could help his new team right away. Thatcher signed New York City native Rahiem Harley who is a recent graduate from Brooklyn Democracy Academy High School.

“Rahiem is a very strong New York guard that plays a tough and physical game,” Thatcher said. “He can really get to the paint and score, and obviously can handle the basketball very well. Harley’s IQ of the game is very strong. He helped lead his team at Brooklyn Democracy Academy with 15 points per game, 5 rebounds per game and 5 assists per game. Rehiem will be looked upon right away to make an impact on this year’s team.”

Thatcher’s Chicago stop was fruitful as well. While there he signed Joey Tianen, a 6-foot, 2-inch guard from Colby Community College, a top-25 team at the National Junior College Athletic Association last season. Thatcher describes him as another strong high IQ guard that will bring skill and experience to the GHC squad. With the additions of Rahiem and Tianen Coach Thatcher is feeling confident of getting the Chokers back to the NWAC Conference Championship this season.
