Montesano takes top prize at Ray Ryan Memorial all-county meet

Bulldogs win six events to place first ahead of Hoquaim, North Beach

Montesano’s depth proved to be the key en route to a team victory at the Ray Ryan Memorial Grays Harbor All-County Track & Field Meet on Friday at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.

The Bulldogs won six of the meet’s 18 events, led by senior sprinter Lilly Causey’s victories in both the 100 and 200 meter races.

Causey also anchored two of Monte’s relay wins, joining Hailey McElroy, Ava Schrader and Alayna Olson to win both the 4×100 and 4×200 meter races.

Monte’s throwers also performed well on Friday, with seniors Hannah Bruland (discus, 95-11.5) and Ashlyn Devereaux (javelin, 118-04) winning two of the meet’s three throwing events.

Monte scored 206 points to easily outpace Hoquiam (115.5 points) and North Beach (96), which placed second and third, respectively.

The Grizzlies were led by an outstanding overall performance from one of the top distance runners in the 1A class – junior Jane Roloff.

Roloff was able to pull away late from Montesano’s emerging sophomore in Samantha Schweppe to win both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races and cruised to a 14-second victory in the 800.

“I knew she was there and it was nice to have someone help push the pace. I knew it was either going to be me or her,” Roloff said of the close races with Schweppe. “I’ve really been trying to work on the last lap as compared to the last 200 meters because I’ve had a hard time with my kick, so I was really focused on that today. … I get stuck at a certain pace and can’t get out of it. So that’s what we’ve been working on, getting out of my head and running faster.”

Hoquiam’s Sydney Gordon won the shot put with a personal-best heave of 32 feet, 9.5 inches; Katrina Jones placed first in the pole vault with a mark of eight feet; and Chloe Kennedy took home the county title in the high jump with a leap of five feet.

North Beach put together another solid effort at the all-county meet with three event victories.

Senior Malia Cox placed first in the long jump with a season-best 15-03 leap while teammate Kaci Osborne-Hansen won the triple jump with a mark of 32-05.
