Bobcats secure soccer playoff berth

GIRLS SOCCER

Bobcats 2, Warriors 0

Elizabeth Martinez scored both goals as Aberdeen nailed down a playoff berth by downing Rochester in an Evergreen 2A Conference finale Monday at Stewart Field.

Coupled with Centralia’s loss to Chehalis on Saturday, the victory gave the Bobcats (4-6, 5-8-2) the conference’s fourth and final postseason slot. They will host the fifth-seeded team from the Greater St. Helens 2A League (either Washougal or Mark Morris) is a loser-out district play-in game at 6 p.m. Thursday at Stewart Field. Thursday’s winner advances to district competition beginning Saturday.

Winless in league play until nearly the midpoint of the season, Aberdeen won four of its final six games.

The Bobcats, as head coach Larry Fleming acknowledged, were not at their best Monday. Although dominating time of possession, they failed to score until the 61st minute. Freshman midfielder Martinez regained possession when her crossing pass deflected off a defender and chipped a ball over the goalkeeper from 27 yards out.

Ten minutes later, Martinez took a long free kick from Anna Foss and poked it in from in front of the goal. Adrianna Vasquez also assisted on the play.

“This wasn’t the greatest performance for the girls,” Fleming said. “But they kept working and were able to do enough to get the win.”

Senior goalkeeper Reagan Glanz recorded her fifth shutout of the season.

Glanz, Vasquez, Bailee Green, Taylor Coker and exchange students Anna Foss, Pim Thongwa and Annanda Fraga were honored in Senior Night ceremonies.

The junior varsity match ended in a 1-1 deadlock. Kenia Galeana scored for Aberdeen, with Savannah Hendricks, Nancy Tobar and Azucena Ceja cited by assistant coach Larry Kinread for fine play.

Wildcats 3, Cardinals 0

WINLOCK — Doing all its scoring in the final 18 minutes, Ocosta blanked Winlock in a Central 2B League contest Monday at Winlock.

Ocosta goalkeeper Kristi Raffelson broke the school record for shutouts with eight. She handled only one shot on Monday.

Despite constant threats, the Wildcats (7-5, 9-5) went scoreless until the 62nd minute, when Kjirstin Hopfer put in the rebound of a Teal Mitby shot.

Mitby found Katelynn Denny for a goal in the 76th minute. Kennedy Merino converted a cross from Denny in the waning moments.

Wildcat coach Mike King cited Mitby, Hopfer and Adriana Huerta for midfield play and Abriana Ness, Ryann Raffelson, Kianna Battiste and Mercedes Denny for defense.

Ocosta hosts Kalama on Wednesday.

Indians fall in four

SOUTH BEND – League-leading Life Christian Academy turned back a strong South Bend challenge for a 25-19, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19 win in a Pacific League contest Monday at Koplitz Fieldhouse.

Jessica Sanchez led the Indians (1-6, 1-11) with 10 kills and six blocks. Livvie Ogilvie and Karley Reidinger were cited by Tribe coach Tricia Needham for fine performances.

“They played well against a very solid team,” Needham commented. “We led several times in the fourth game but ball-handling errors got the best of us. It’s exciting to watch our team defensively and our blocking has really improved over the course of the season.”

South Bend’s Katelyn Doyle was honored in Senior Night ceremonies.

The teams split a pair of junior varsity sets, with South Bend’s Hailey Smith and Erica Pearson commended for all-around play.

The Indians visit North Beach on Wednesday for their final league match.
