Monday Prep Roundup: Hoquiam, Elma romp in softball openers

Hoquiam, Elma score lopsided softball wins

SOFTBALL

Grizzlies 15, Wolves 0

Abbi Spradlin homered and drove in five runs as Hoquiam opened its softball season by thumping Class 2A Black Hills in a non-league contest shortened to four innings by the 15-run mercy rule.

Spradlin socked her first varsity HR in the second inning with Kylee Bagwell aboard.

Capitalizing on six walks in a seven-run first inning, Hoquiam finished with 12 hits for the contest.

“After they started throwing strikes, we hit the ball really well,” Grizzly coach Keith Reynvaan said.

English Hyde pitched a two-hitter to pick up the victory. Maya Jump was cited for all-around play.

The Grizzlies host rival Aberdeen on Thursday.

ELMA — Destry Dineen led off the game with a home run to ignite Elma past Eatonville in a non-league season opener Monday at the Ventron Complex.

Morgan Thompson blasted a three-run homer in a six-run first. Dineen added another homer in the fifth as the Eagles (1-0) closed out the game via the 10-run mercy rule.

Winning pitcher Quin Mikel helped her own cause with two doubles and a single. Molly Johnston also doubled twice, with Dineen, Thompson and Chloe Velasco adding two hits each.

Rambo, Johnston and Thompson were cited for outstanding defense.

“All in all, it was a nice team effort,” Elma coach Roger Elliott said.

The Eagles host Ocosta on Wednesday.

Tornados 8, Bobcats 0

YELM — Dres Schwaier and Tayelyn Cutler combined for 18 strikeouts as Yelm blanked Aberdeen in a non-league game Monday at Yelm.

The Bobcats (1-1) remained within striking distance until a four-run Tornado outburst in the sixth. They could make little headway, however, against Schwaier in particular.

“We faced a dominant pitcher, probably one of the best we’ll face all year,” AHS coach Scott Wilson said. “(Our) outfield play was great, we ran down some balls that I thought would drop for sure.”

Reagan Glanz had two of Aberdeen’s three hits. Wilson cited the pitching of Jalyn McDaniel.

Aberdeen travels to River Ridge on Wednesday.

MONTESANO — Nate Kloempken and Cyrus Parsons combined on a three-hitter as Montesano edged Centralia in a season-opening non-leaguer Monday at Vessey Field.

The Bulldogs prevailed despite mustering only one hit. Teegan Zillyett scored Monte’s runs, both of which were unearned.

“Our defense was the difference in the game,” Montesano coach Mike Osgood said. “Centralia had multiple chances to score with runners in scoring position, including the sixth and seventh innings. Our defense did not make an error and made a few run-saving plays.”

The Bulldogs travel to Chehalis on Friday.

Mules 3, Titans 0

PE ELL — Three Wahkiakum pitchers combined on a no-hitter as the Mules outdueled Pe Ell-Willapa Valley in a Central League opener Monday at Pe Ell.

Titan pitcher Cub Bair also was brilliant against the Central League favorites, authoring a no-hitter of his own through four innings.

But Terrance Record’s three-run homer in the sixth proved the difference.

“Not your typical first game of the season,” PWV coach Kelly Barnum said. “We work a ton and we expect our kids to play good defense, but the kids were phenomenal. What got us tonight was we weren’t ready for the velocity their guys were throwing.”

He cited shortstop Frank Roonsburg and second baseman Keyton Barnum for particularly fine defense. Barnum handled seven chances flawlessly.

The Titans journey to Winlock on Friday.

Wahkiakum 000 003 0 — 3 3 0

TUMWATER — Connecting on a couple of 35-yard shots in the first half, Class 2A Tumwater thumped Montesano in a non-league season opener Monday at Tumwater Stadium.

The T-Birds led 3-0 at the half.

“Tumwater is a good team, they had a lot more possessions than we did,” Monte coach Rick Denholm said. “We have eight new starters, so they’ve got to learn to get into their roles.”

Montesano’s Connor Parkinson and Luis Muro were cited for overall play.

The Bulldogs face another 2A team when they host Black Hills on Thursday.
