GIRLS SOCCER

Wildcats 3, Indians 0

WESTPORT — Ocosta notched its second straight shutout by topping Toledo in its Central League opener Monday.

Outshooting the Indians 14-0 in the first half, the Wildcats (1-0, 2-0) scored twice during that span. Kennedy Merino converted a short pass from Kjirstin Hopfer in the 16th minute. Less than a minute later, Ocosta’s Katelynn Denny nailed a long direct kick from the right side.

Denny added the final goal on an indirect kick in the 70th minute. Adriana Huerta was credited with the assist.

Wildcat goalkeeper Kristi Raffelson recorded her second shutout. Wildcat coach Mike King cited the play of Huerta, Trinity White, Kendal Wilson and Maia Soderlund in the midfield and defenders Kianna Battiste and Ryann Raffelson.

The Wildcats travel to Tacoma on Wednesday to face Life Christian at the South End Recreation Center.

Eagles 3, Tigers 0

ELMA — Brooke Sutherby scored twice as Elma blanked Napavine in a non-league match Saturday at Davis Field.

Sutherby converted a penalty kick in the fifth minute after the Tigers were whistled for a handball in the box. She also scored off a solo run in the 24th minute as Elma (1-1-1) did all its scoring in the first half.

In between, Elma’s Kayli Johnson knocked in a crossing pass from Jillian Bieker in the 16th minute.

Although noting that the Eagles didn’t convert all of their opportunities, Elma coach Scott Rockey gave his team generally high marks.

“The passing is continuing to improve and so is the possession (play),” Rockey said. “We had some beautiful crosses that went across the box and were missed by one or two girls.”

Bieker and Johnson were commended for their play in the midfield.

Vikings win in four

MENLO — Connecting on 96 percent of its serves, Willapa Valley topped Onalaska, 26-24, 25-15, 20-25, 25-16, in a non-league match Monday at Tenoski Gym.
