TAHOLAH — Stanley Markistrum and Todd Pickernell each picked up feature-race wins at the 2018 Johney Bryson Sr. Memorial Canoe Race held on the Quinault River in Taholah July 3-5.

The week started well for Markistrum, who won the first-day, five-mile power canoe feature race aboard the Norman Sr. on Tuesday.

Darren Sansom placed second after winning the consolation race earlier in the day. Pickernell, captaining the Valerie Lee — a canoe piloted by the event’s namesake to victory in the late 1960’s — placed third.

Pickernell, who along with Markistrum is a grandson of John Bryson Sr., took to day two feature race after using his craft’s 25-horsepower Mercury outboard motor to reach speeds upwards of 49 mph. Sansom, who won the consolation race earlier in the day, placed second with Markistrum finishing third.

Sansom led the points race after two days, totalling 73 points on day one and adding 50 additional points on day two for a total of 123. Markistrum was second with 113 followed by Pickernell (108) and Pete Kalama (63).

Pickernell carried the momentum of Wednesday’s victory into Thursday’s 15-mile Chow Chow River Race, which he won ahead of Archie Howard, Sansom and Vincent Buckle, respectively.

Sansom leads the points race in the long-race division with 143 points, a mere five points ahead of Pickernell.

The Taholah Canoe Club will be hosting its next race July 21-22 in La Push.
