Rochester 8, Aberdeen 1

Entering the game flat, Aberdeen feel behind early and couldn’t catch up against a solid pitching performance in an 8-1 loss to Rochester on Friday in Rochester.

“We came out kind of flat tonight and on a wet, windy day it’s hard to get up for baseball,” Aberdeen head coach Dave Hinchen said. “We didn’t and they did and they jumped on us early and kind of took us out of the game and we never really climbed back in there.”

After a scoreless first inning, Aberdeen (2-3 overall, 2A Evergreen) allowed five runs — three on passed balls — in the second inning to dig itself an early hole.

The Bobcats got a run back in the top of the third when Baylor Ainsworth led off with a double to right field and advanced to third on an Eli Brown single two batters later.

Ainsworth was chased home on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Eisele to cut the Braves lead to 5-1.

But Aberdeen fell behind further the following half-inning as Rochester put two more runs on the scoreboard on an RBI single By Garron Smith followed by a two-out unearned run as the Aberdeen defense committed one of its four errors in the ballgame.

Rochester (3-3, 2-3) would add a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 8-1, which was more than enough for Braves pitcher Kyle Wilson, who was threw an efficient complete game, allowing the one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

“(Wilson) was just throwing strikes and throwing to contact,” Hinchen said. “We hit the ball hard a lot, but right at people. … He pitched well and pitched to contact and defensively they were solid.”

Five of Rochester’s eight runs were unearned.

Brown (1-3), Ainsworth (1-3, 2B, R), Mason Sorensen (1-2) and Kenny Dawson (1-3) had Aberdeen’s base hits in the game.

Brown took the loss for Aberdeen, allowing two earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk in 1 1-3 innings pitched.

Next up for Aberdeen is the baseball version of the Myrtle Street Rivalry, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.

According to Hinchen, the Bobcats should get back five players who were inactive due to a two-week COVID quarantine. All were upperclassmen with many of them figuring to eat up several innings on the pitching mound, forcing Hinchen and his staff to bring up several junior varsity players and thrust them into the varsity lineup.

Aberdeen went 2-2 during that stretch, which is suits Hinchen just fine.

“I would’ve took that for sure,” Hinchen responded when asked if he would’ve taken the split when he first got the bad news a few weeks ago. “We’ve got a lot better since then and the way these kids played have really made it hard for us coaches as to who do we give the playing time to. It’s a nice problem to have.”
