Familiar names win titles at Pacific League Sub-District Finals

North Beach’s Cox, Raymond’s Gardner, Willapa Valley’s Layman and Pe Ell’s Yost win multiple events

Several local athletes qualified for the state tournament and earned Pacific League championships at the Pacific League Sub-District Finals track and field meet on Friday at Raymond High School.

North Beach junior Lorin Cox, who has been dominant in the short sprints this season, won a league title by winning both the girls 100-meter sprint (12.79) and the 200 (26.78). Cox has won 16 100- and 200-meter sprints combined this season.

Willapa Valley’s Hallee Layman earned two league titles, winning both the shot put (40 feet, five inches) and discus (125-05).

Layman’s teammate, Brooke Friese, cleared 10-06 to cruise to victory in the pole vault while Willapa Valley’s Hannah Cook struck gold with a win in the 300-meter hurdles (50.30). Cook also set a school record with a PR 34-02 to place fourth in the triple jump.

Willapa Valley placed third in the girls team standings, with 103.5. North Beach placed fourth with 93.5 points.

Senior Marcus Pope won the javelin with a throw of 160-09 and his Hyaks teammate, Reagan Harnagy, won the high jump with a mark of 5-08. Isaiah Richards joined Pope and Harnagy as North Beach league champions with a win in the pole vault (13-10).

Raymond’s 4×100 relay team of Joseph Villalpando, Curtis Broten, Patrick Edwards and Jeremiah Meade claimed a league title with a time of 45.85, with Meade erasing a four-plus meter deficit in doing so.

While they didn’t claim any league titles on Friday, the Ocosta Wildcats qualified 13 athletes for the district meet, led by Evan Waara, who placed second in the boys 100-meter dash with a personal-best time of 11.73, and Devyn Martin, who had a PR mark of 5-02 in the girls high jump to place second.
