Bobcats narrowly miss upset in soccer

Aberdeen almost knocks off league-leading Black Hills

GIRLS SOCCER

Wolves 2, Bobcats 1

League-leading Black Hills survived a scare from rapidly improving Aberdeen before emerging with an Evergreen 2A Conference victory on Thursday at Stewart Field.

The Wolves remained unbeaten in league play. But the Bobcats, 6-0 losers at Black Hills earlier in the season, provided them with easily their sternest test.

“Losses are never great, but this almost feels like a win,” AHS coach Larry Fleming said. “Playing this well against the caliber of team we played tonight of how far the girls have come since the beginning of the season.”

Black Hills converted a penalty kick with four minutes remaining in the first half to lead 2-0.

Two minutes later, Aberdeen’s Adrianna Vasquez flicked Taylor Coker’s free kick to Emmy Walsh, who slotted it past the goalkeeper to narrow the margin to one.

The Bobcats (2-5, 3-7-2) applied the pressure in the final 10 minutes of the second half, but were unable to equalize.

Vasquez, Emma Green, Anna Foss, Elizabeth Martinez, Nayeli Morris and goalkeeper Reagan Glanz drew Fleming’s praise.

Black Hills took the JV contest, 3-0, with Savannah Hendricks and goalkeeper Logan Glanz cited for fine play.

The Bobcats journey to Chehalis on Tuesday.

VOLLEYBALL

Elks win in three

AMANDA PARK — Making its final home appearance, Lake Quinault remained unbeaten in Coastal 1B competition with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-16 win over Mary M. Knight on Thursday.

Elk coach Sue Kalama cited the play of her two seniors, Kayleen Spigler and Trina Lewis.

“Kayleen’s serves were phenomenal,” Kalama said.

The Elks (5-0, 8-1) will participate in Wishkah’s “Dig Pink” exhibition to benefit cancer research on Saturday. Lake Quinault travels to Oakville on Tuesday.

Loggerettes in three

WISHKAH — Serving 21 aces as a team, Wishkah thumped Oakville, 25-10, 25-19, 25-7, in a Coastal 1B League contest Thursday at Brian Eager Memorial Gym.

“Our girls played as a cohesive unit,” Wishkah coach Darci McMaster said. “Our passes and sets were under control and we played smart up at the net.”

Wishkah senior Jesse Thompson was commended for net play.

The Loggerettes will host other members of the Coastal League in their annual “Dig Pink” exhibition tournament on Saturday.

Gulls win in three

RAYMOND — Host Raymond rolled past Ilwaco, 25-19, 25-17, 25-22, in a Pacific 2B League match Thursday at Raymond.

Karlee Freeman paced the Gulls (3-1, 8-2) with 14 kills and three aces. Maddi Murray added eight kills, Sadie Warnstadt six kills and four aces and Tina Sypaphay five kiills and three blocks for Raymond.

“Overall, we had a great night passing and serving,” Raymond coach Bob Swogger said. “We also had a great night offensively spreading the offensive load among all the players on the floor.”

The Gulls also won the JV (25-23, 25-18) and C squad matches (25-20, 25-20).

Raymond (3-1, 8-2) travels to Northwest Christian on Tuesday.

Bobcats fall in three

TUMWATER – Aberdeen fell to Black Hills, 25-9, 25-10, 25-16 in an Evergreen 2A Conference match Thursday at Tumwater.

The Bobcats had trouble getting into an offensive rhythm and could not connect on passes with any consistency.

Black Hills’ overpowering offense proved to be too much for Aberdeen to handle. But Bobcat head coach Doug Basler said he liked the fight his team showed in the final set of the match.

“I was actually pleased how they didn’t roll over and quit,” he said. “They came out, played hard and kept the intensity up. They challenged them a little bit in that third game.”

Anna Arquette provided some energy on defense and came away with five blocks in the losing effort.

All three levels of Aberdeen volleyball lost on Thursday with the junior varsity team losing in three sets and the C team losing in two.

Aberdeen (1-5, 2-8) will take on Chehalis at home on Tuesday.

Vikings lose in four

MENLO — Willapa Valley played some close sets with Northwest Christian before dropping a 25-16, 25-21, 22-25, 25-17 decision in Pacific League play Thursday at Menlo.

Emilee Layman and Olivia Betrozoff both came away with 11 kills. Layman also added five blocks.

Raina Jones also played well in the front row throughout the night.

Despite playing them close for most of the night, Willapa Valley head coach Lori Snodgrass is hoping to see her team execute for the entirety of the match next time out.

“We were inconsistent,” she said. “Our serve-receive was off tonight.”

Willapa Valley (2-3, 6-5) will take on South Bend on the road on Tuesday.
