Jay Lelli

Jay Lelli died at home in Ocean Shores, Washington on Feb. 15, 2022.

Jay Lelli was born in Tacoma, Washington on March 5, 1954, and died at home in Ocean Shores, Washington on Feb. 15, 2022, after a long illness. He grew up in Federal Way, attending local schools including Bates Technical College and living in the Tacoma and Federal Way areas until moving to Ocean Shores in 2007.

Jay started work as a casual longshoreman on the Tacoma waterfront when he was 16. He began an apprenticeship at the Port of Tacoma when he was 18 and spent a career of 30 years there as a journeyman crane and conveyor mechanic, retiring at 48. As a member of ILWU Local 23, Port of Tacoma Division he continued the family legacy of strong union involvement, holding many different union positions.

Jay’s many interests included flying stunt kites, driving fast and vintage cars, Harleys, playing loud music and guitars, and most recently learning to play ukulele. He was proud of his abilities to fix almost anything mechanical and enjoyed spending time in his home shop, working on his own motorcycles and helping others fix their vehicles.

Celebrating 35 years of sobriety this February, Jay was very committed to and active in the recovery community. He leaves many very dear friends behind. He had a kind heart, and frequently helped friends and neighbors.

He was predeceased by his parents, Philip M. and B. Joann Lelli, and his brother Ross Lelli. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Judy Peterson, his three children: Janelle Lelli and her daughter Sarah; Jayson (Jennifer) Lelli and their children Ryan and Megan; and Paula (Shawn) Trinidad. He is also survived by his brothers Marty, Dean (Susan) Lelli and Vance (Kimberlie) Lelli; his aunts Phyllis Lelli and Sharon Lavelle as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws and the “sister he never wanted” Luanne Dains-Mohler.
