Lifelong Grays Harbor resident Gerald “Jerry” Albert Scure, died on June 24, 2022, at his Westport, Washington home. He was 83 years old.

He was born August 12, 1938, at St. Joseph Hospital in Aberdeen to parents Joseph and Helen Scure. He attended St. Mary School, Miller Junior High School, and graduated from Weatherwax High School with the Class of 1956.

Jerry joined the Army in June of 1959 with dreams of globe-trotting the world. However, his orders to serve at Fort Lewis in Washington State kept him close to home. He was honorably discharged in 1962. He returned to Grays Harbor and was employed at ITT Rayonier at Hoquiam in the maintenance division for 20 years.

He then entered Mount Angel Abbey in St. Benedict, Oregon. Although he was a quiet man, seven months of monastic silence in an abbey was plenty. A lifelong parishioner of St. Mary Church, Jerry remained a faith-filled Catholic – his faith was central to his life.

Jerry was employed by the Aberdeen School District and worked at McDermoth Elementary School. He treasured his long career there and was loved by teachers, staff, and students alike.

As a Westport resident for years, he was a fixture on the beaches, a proficient clam digger, and a dedicated walker on the Lighthouse Beach Trail. His quiet demeanor and ever-present smile endeared him to his lifelong friends and to new acquaintances. Jerry is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Patricia Bloomquist. He is survived by his brother Gordon (Claudette) Scure, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 8, 2022, at St. Mary Church in Aberdeen. A private urn committal will be at Fern Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to St. Mary School, 518 North H Street, Aberdeen, WA 98520 would be greatly appreciated by his family.
